James L. Brooks’s strange, shaggy rom-com “Ella McCay” tries to do too much, and succeeds only partially, David Sims writes:
A Throwback Rom-Com About One Millennial Trying to Have It All
James L. Brooks’s “Ella McCay” is wacky and weird—but it doesn’t quite work.

I'd love to replace twitter with this website but I won't lie: it's a little off-putting that so many of the popular movie tweets are like, stuck in 2012 making fun of m night shyamalan and saying avatar is just dances with smurfs

Congratulations! Can’t wait for this!
Feels great to be coming out of podcast semi-retirement and to be getting an excuse to blather about movies on the regular with Richard, who will soon be filled with regret when I try to make "wrong kid died!" into some kind of regular bit about HAMNET
It’s true! The great @alisonwillmore.bsky.social and I are debuting our new show Critical Darlings on the Blank Check podcast feed on January 1st! Come listen to us talk about all the awards-season movies, won’t you?

So... it's REALLY BIZARRE that this version of 'Animal Farm' is less "missing the point" than "doing a whole NEW point" where 'Soviet revolutionary govts will corrupt themselves from within" is replaced with "Stalinism gets spoiled from outside by Western capitalism" 🤣

"The same class of AI models that enables facial recognition’s rise can also undermine it. [DiffProtect] is built on diffusion models, the technology that underpins many of today’s photorealistic AI image generators."
👀👀

DiffProtect “rewrites a person’s face in a photograph using the same generative technology behind modern image creation tools.
The resulting photo still looks like the person to any human viewer, but to state-of-the-art facial recognition systems, the image becomes something else entirely.”
A new kind of digital camouflage emerges from DARPA AI research | Biometric Update
The technique, called DiffProtect, quietly rewrites a person’s face in a photograph using the same generative technology behind modern image creation tools.

Totally correct
My hottest take is that letting cops park in red zones for mundane errands and coffee breaks; I think “you can break the law at your discretion as a job perk” is the small domino that ends in the large domino of “shooting protesters in the face with rubber bullets”
It must be wild to get to abuse the public then pay for it with the public's money

Genuinely think this is the most depressed I’ve been since November 2016. I honestly don’t know what to say or do except to say that the experience of seeing a movie with people you love and people you’ve never met is worth fighting for.
Fuuuuuuuuuuck
Netflix has agreed to buy Warner Bros. in a deal worth $82.7 billion, a deal that would unite two of the biggest libraries in film and animation and reshape the streaming and, potentially, theatrical landscapes.

Who controls what IP isn't what's at play with this new merger: it's about who gets your attention & dollars. It means fewer shows & fewer movies as not to step on each other's dicks.

1/3 of Hollywood is already out of work from past consolidation. How many more voices will they run out of town?

I say it every time I go to the airport. It’s the most realistic shot at a 45 to 49 State sweep in our modern environment if someone would just have the courage
For real, though.

If you're too young to remember this, DHS was a thing we just made up right after 9-11 to get Bin Laden and, like... it took awhile but we got that guy 🤷‍♂️ We don't need this sh-- anymore. Somebody could totally run and win on "We're done now. Airports can be chill again."
Yeah okay, abolish ICE or whatever OR

Eliminate the Department of Homeland Security altogether. Move TSA back to Transportation and restore FEMA as an independent agency. Sort the other half-dozen component agencies back into their natural homes.

Less criminal abuse and around $40 billion savings.

“What’s interesting about Star Wars now is they’re no longer trying to do the Star Wars to end all Star Wars. They’re letting the universe exist, and tell[ing] really interesting stories within that.”

Pennsylvania Democrats:

here's an offseason election to make a point of voting in, because (a) it's important for protecting basic rights, and (b) Republicans apparently don't know or care about it.
Pennsylvania Republicans are mounting an unusual effort to oust three Democratic state supreme court justices and deprive Democrats of the court majority they’ve enjoyed for the last decade.
Inside the Clunky Elections to Control Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court
The GOP is making an expensive push to end Democrats’ majority on a court at the center of election lawsuits, sparking a fledging campaign season with little precedent or template.
