Bookish, treeish, peripatetic, frequently salt water adjacent.
May anyone who voted for this never know a meal without saliva in the ingredients again.
Just now, a national trans healthcare felony ban for youth has passed the US House, with 10 year prison terms.

3 Dems crossed party lines to vote to jail providers.

4 GOP crossed party lines to vote against.

It is not expected to pass the Senate, where Dems hold filibuster power.

Story to come.

@tkingfisher.com’s Snake-Eater is an absolute delight. The love of the landscape illuminates a horror tinged fantasy, and grounds the eccentric community that makes the heroine a home. The next post has a major structural spoiler, so proceed at your own risk.

1.75 miles. 40F and raining? Definitely running in shorts weather. Please admire this very persistent rose with me. (I was Britten-pilled at a young age and have the setting of “There Is No Rose of Such Virture” from Ceremony of Carols stuck in my head.)

Getting back into the swing of things, post holiday, trying to figure out what is convalescence and what is just a prolonged break from running, but either way glad for the cool and quiet of a morning run. (Picture is not from my run—sigh)

1.75 miles. Still feeling convalescent but a whole lot better than even a week ago.

1.4 very slow miles: first run in nearly a month. It felt like coming home to myself.

I…just spent an absurd amount of time trying to figure out how to get an 11 foot long hammerhead shark model to the west coast, so that I could surprise my housemates with a ceiling shark.

Please note, that they have done nothing that suggests that they want such a thing.
Are you located in the DC-Baltimore-Philadelphia-New York corridor?

Have you always wanted to have your very own 11 foot long papier-mâché hammerhead shark?

Now available for free!

Perfect for museums, community centers, or your living room!

Save this lovely creature from imminent destruction!

My email and text inboxes are full of Democrats begging for money. No more until Schumer is out.
I've been voting Dem for 40+ years. I am SO. F*CKING. SICK. of this feckless, cowardly bullsh*t. 🤨

I continue to be bad at convalescing.

Housemate: there’s nothing stopping you from going back to bed.
Me: internalized Calvinism. The worst kind.

I finished @kateelliottsff.bsky.social’s The Nameless Land, which finishes the Witch Roads Duology. In a high fantasy setting where the story could easily and satisfactorily been a quest to save the world, we instead narrowly focus on a few people swept up in the machinations of princes. 1/🧵

TIL that Dashiell Hammett taught a detective-story writing class at the Communist Party Workers’ School in New York, and I now have a new answer to, “if you could go anywhere in time, where would you go?”

I just read @alixeharrow.bsky.social’s The Everlasting which feels like someone put Emily Tesh’s Some Desperate Glory in a blender with Geoffrey of Monmouth and Joan of Arc. Which is to say that there’s ruminations on the darker uses of national myths, propaganda, and time travel.

During tonight’s Trick-or-Treating, our 3-year-old got more and more excited.

“More houses! More candy!”

Until he suddenly looked to the sky and shouted (verbatim):

“Can I eat the moon!?”

Don’t let anyone tell you you can’t, little one. Be the cosmic horror you want to see in the world.

Convalescing is not my strong suit. But if I’m going to have to convalesce, convalescing with the latest installment of @maxgladstone.bsky.social’s Craft Wars is the way to go. Late stage capitalist bullshit, necromancy, malevolent squid gods, spiders from beyond the stars, all the good stuff.

So I discovered one of the worse ways for gallbladders to go wrong. Two surgeries and four days in the hospital later, I am now free of gallstones where they shouldn’t be, and a gallbladder. I’m no longer the color of a daffodil or trying to digest my own liver. I will miss the view from my room.

Radiation adhesions and throwing up don’t mix. Also ribs are attached to too many things. Radiation was three years ago. Throwing up was almost 24 hours ago. It feels very unfair that I’m in “involuntary whimpering” amounts of pain.

Two weeks more or less with no running posts? Oh dear. Running has been happening. And raccoon spotting. And getting jump scared by a yard full of mannequins dressed as classic horror movie monsters. In my defense it was dark and suddenly there was a human shape Right There.

Reposting this poem here for @thelabandfield.bsky.social who retweets it every winter. Yet again, I'm wondering where *is* my soup and hibernation?

@marthawells.com’s Queen Demon manages to end on not one but two horrible cliffhangers and I can’t wait to find out what happens next…except I will have to. Thanks linear time. In the meantime: Wells’ prose, subtle world building, and dry humor is a delight to reread.

Before yesterday took a turn for the barfy, I had one of the loveliest runs: 6 miles along the Ruston Way trail, and I met a very sweet corgi named Max who is my new best friend.

There ought to be a law against throwing up while the evil DJ in your head plays the “my Gawd, what have you done?” bit of Pink Pony Club over and over.
