I'm a bit of a mess
Pinned
Just came across a post that made me realize I never introduced myself here.

I'm Camila, former #biomedical #scientist now supporting #startups and collaborations in #innovation.

I'm a Canadian currently living in Europe, and as you can see from my pic, I don't believe #COVID is over.

You could actually structure your moral code around the idea that law enforcement doesn't exist to execute people. You don't have to create perfect victim narratives, you can just refuse to accept that the state gets to kill people.

People already working hard to prove how perfect Alex Pretti was. To show he didn't "deserve" to be killed. But it's a trap folks. You're only feeding into a dynamic where people who are considered lesser get no protection. You don't have to be an Alex Pretti to deserve to live.

Democrats can and must make it clear there will be trials and anyone even somewhat associated with ICE will face them. Maybe give a quit-your-job deadline on appeasement and give people 72 hours. I don't know. But currently the plan is to let them murder us in the street and get away with it.

Since Americans insist on parallels to Nazi-controlled Europe over the American history that inspired the Nazis, now is a good time to remind everyone that Anne Frank didn’t die in the gas chamber or by firing squad. She was kidnapped by the gestapo and died of typhus in a prison camp.
I’ve been writing Popular Information for 8 years, and this is one of the most important stories I’ve ever published. This is a humanitarian crisis that has gone unreported.
ICE has stopped paying for detainee medical treatment
ICE halted payments in October, and the situation will persist for at least several more months

If something like this actually occurs (with Mr. Orange TACO, it's not a given), it would almost certainly be set up to exclude some products that are critical to the US (like Potash).

Can Canada add some export tariffs on those excluded products? Something like, oh I don't know, 100%? Fair's fair
“If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% Tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the U.S.A.”

So er, I don't want to be alarmist my Canadian friends but it's not a GREAT sign when the superpower next door starts talking about how the people of a resource rich region of yours yearn for the freedom to join them and suggesting referendums...
Bessent pushes Albertan independence from Canada: "Albertans are very independent people. There's a rumor they may have a referendum on whether they want to stay in Canada or not. People are talking. People want sovereignty. They want what the US has got."

Aww, he took his ball (that absolutely no one wanted) and went home. What a loss! /s

It's nuts how he has used two bad movie tropes of undesirable behaviour in a row this week: mobster threats, then spoiled kid tantrums.

If he didn't control the US military, his decline would be just sad to watch

AI is a neat little statistics trick, and it has some interesting applications in science and medicine etc., but by and large the costs outweigh the benefits for other uses.

Oh and btw this should be a massive red flag that, economically speaking, it's just a huge con.

It's not that Europe "must be ready" — Europe *is* ready.

What we're looking for is leaders who are ready as well.
This moment of global change is fraught with dangers.

And Europe must be ready to change even faster.

To become more independent. For its own future.

When one visits the Nazi Documentation Center in Munich, one of the most salient points is that everyone *knew*. The Nazis used to chain up forced labourers and walk them through normal neighbourhoods to their workplaces.

But the process to get to that level of compliance wasn't instant.
I don't want to paint a rosy picture, because it's a city under siege. People are being abducted all the time. One person told me about watching 1-2 abductions a day, just in her own work following ICE.

Even after Trump is gone, the world will remember that he threatened to forcibly seize the territory of a peaceful democratic ally, and our institutions failed to immediately remove him. That makes US dangerously unreliable, not just one senile gangster.
His not being impeached by the end of the business day as a result of this threat is as much a problem as the threat itself. It’s not just Trump that the world has to worry about, it’s a GOP that supports him and Democrats who suck their thumbs and refuse to even discuss pushing to remove him

My skepticism regarding Carney’s speech is rooted in the observation that he’s failed to do the small things that would signal resolve to actually move away from the US, particularly expanding regulatory & statistical capacity. Instead, he’s actually doing the opposite. Is he going to reverse that?
January 21, 2026 at 11:11 AM
I didn't know about Statistics Canada.

I can't believe that only 10 years later, we basically ended up re-electing Stephen Harper anyway...
Carney is gutting the areas — global affairs, Statistics Canada — that are absolutely essential to creating the Canadian resilience he claims to seek.
I’m not asking for miracles. I’m looking for him to pay attention to the basics that would actually lay the groundwork for his professed vision.
He’s expanding our military. Updating our systems. And so on and so forth.

I don’t know what you expected. Miracles? To pretend we have power we do NOT have and bluster and fight a battle we aren’t ready for?

One last thing: If Carney is so keen on building new international institutions, why is he cutting Global Affairs Canada, i.e., the Canadian experts best placed to help build these institutions? Words v actions.

I would love to see Carney put into action both his campaign and Davos proclamations. But his revolutionary rhetoric, to date, has been matched with domestic tinkering and a refusal to take necessary steps (especially expanding, not contracting, the public service) to follow through on his words.

Canadians would do well to consider that Carney's well-received Davos speech is an extension of his campaign rhetoric. And the past nine months have been marked by a growing awareness of the chasm between his campaign rhetoric and action when it comes to the US.

If we had a halfway decent opposition party in Canada, they’d endorse the words Carney used today, and then hammer him relentlessly on implementation or lack thereof.
