I'm a bit of a mess
Pinned
Just came across a post that made me realize I never introduced myself here.

I'm Camila, former #biomedical #scientist now supporting #startups and collaborations in #innovation.

I'm a Canadian currently living in Europe, and as you can see from my pic, I don't believe #COVID is over.

Toni Morrison said something that I'm paraphrasing here:

"You can't forgive yourself for doing something terrible without shame. Skipping responsibility and using a substitute emotion like guilt is virtually useless. You must go through the fire to come out on the other side." #blacksky
We need everyone we can get in this fight against a fascist takeover.

If your first instinct to someone being politically mobilized by all this is to give them a sneering "well, what took you so long?" you don't actually care about our winning this; you just want to be able to say you were right.

You not enthusiastically hailing my belated, sour, minimal, crabbed, peevish, grudging admission that you were right about where things were going is the real fascism.

My favourite part of these posts is the terrified undertone of "these people were supposed to be on our side!/shit, maybe we AREN'T the Silent Majority..."

Is there anything written on what comes after the #fascism in the US is defeated? How will this hateful ideology be ripped out from the roots?

I imagine it HAS to start with money (no one who was part of this, especially sponsors, can be allowed to have any substantial amount) and rights (voting+)

How would you react to finding out your local police and politicians shopped at a corner store that openly sold kiddie porn?
Now why do we give the same folks a pass for continuing to use "X"?

Do we really think that a Canadian government that can't find the moral clarity to act against a child abuse platform will resist a multi-pronged American assault on Canadian sovereignty?

Jesus godamned tapdancing Christ.

Do not fucking reskeet the still shot of Alex Pretti being shot. I don’t care if it’s being used to show parallels to the Nazis

Fucking put a godamned warning on that image. Jesus. What is wrong with you people.

Jesus, the replies and quotes here...

On one hand, I get the first reaction to think "no, we won't let them take this away from us."

OTOH, if you don't realize that the US and its Constitution cannot and will not exist in their current form whether the bad guys or the good guys win, you're BEHIND

Dems should introduce lots of such legislation, demand hearings and debate, make a huge fuss, use paid media to call out GOP members who are blocking their consideration--and make clear this GOP Congress is enabling the madness.

Dems should introduce legislation now defunding ICE and CBP operations in Minnesota, so they have to leave the state. One sentence bill. Demand an immediate vote. Maybe refuse to vote for cloture on any funding bills (or other bills) until a vote. Make the GOP Congress break w/ Trump or own it all.

#Carney: "a country that can't feed itself can't protect itself" and "us middle powers gotta build relationships together"

Also Carney: massively cuts Agriculture, Fisheries, Global Affairs funding (and health, of course, because surely having a healthy population plays no role in defense)

You could actually structure your moral code around the idea that law enforcement doesn't exist to execute people. You don't have to create perfect victim narratives, you can just refuse to accept that the state gets to kill people.

People already working hard to prove how perfect Alex Pretti was. To show he didn't "deserve" to be killed. But it's a trap folks. You're only feeding into a dynamic where people who are considered lesser get no protection. You don't have to be an Alex Pretti to deserve to live.

Democrats can and must make it clear there will be trials and anyone even somewhat associated with ICE will face them. Maybe give a quit-your-job deadline on appeasement and give people 72 hours. I don't know. But currently the plan is to let them murder us in the street and get away with it.

Since Americans insist on parallels to Nazi-controlled Europe over the American history that inspired the Nazis, now is a good time to remind everyone that Anne Frank didn’t die in the gas chamber or by firing squad. She was kidnapped by the gestapo and died of typhus in a prison camp.
I’ve been writing Popular Information for 8 years, and this is one of the most important stories I’ve ever published. This is a humanitarian crisis that has gone unreported.
ICE has stopped paying for detainee medical treatment
ICE halted payments in October, and the situation will persist for at least several more months

If something like this actually occurs (with Mr. Orange TACO, it's not a given), it would almost certainly be set up to exclude some products that are critical to the US (like Potash).

Can Canada add some export tariffs on those excluded products? Something like, oh I don't know, 100%? Fair's fair
“If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% Tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the U.S.A.”

So er, I don't want to be alarmist my Canadian friends but it's not a GREAT sign when the superpower next door starts talking about how the people of a resource rich region of yours yearn for the freedom to join them and suggesting referendums...
Bessent pushes Albertan independence from Canada: "Albertans are very independent people. There's a rumor they may have a referendum on whether they want to stay in Canada or not. People are talking. People want sovereignty. They want what the US has got."

Aww, he took his ball (that absolutely no one wanted) and went home. What a loss! /s

It's nuts how he has used two bad movie tropes of undesirable behaviour in a row this week: mobster threats, then spoiled kid tantrums.

If he didn't control the US military, his decline would be just sad to watch

It's not that Europe "must be ready" — Europe *is* ready.

What we're looking for is leaders who are ready as well.
This moment of global change is fraught with dangers.

And Europe must be ready to change even faster.

To become more independent. For its own future.

When one visits the Nazi Documentation Center in Munich, one of the most salient points is that everyone *knew*. The Nazis used to chain up forced labourers and walk them through normal neighbourhoods to their workplaces.

But the process to get to that level of compliance wasn't instant.
I don't want to paint a rosy picture, because it's a city under siege. People are being abducted all the time. One person told me about watching 1-2 abductions a day, just in her own work following ICE.
