William Lloyd Garrison on empty appeals to tradition:
“Why is literacy important?”

Socioeconomic Politics Nerd: *rambles on about civic engagement, material enrichment, individual well-being, etc*

Joyce Carol Oates: If you are literate, you can drive a billionaire into a mental breakdown!

Fun fact: Copland’s ‘Lincoln Portrait’, which has excerpts of Lincoln’s speeches throughout, was dropped by Eisenhower’s 1953 Inauguration committee because Republican Congressmen Fred Busby of Illinois complained about Copland’s “suspect political affiliations.”

This past wkend I went to a performance that included the 1942 piece Lincoln Portrait, written by the secular Jewish, leftist composer from NYC, Aaron Copland.

That & this essay from James has been a pertinent reminder of how a broad left coalition should embrace a duty-bound, American idealism.
I've written about Pericles, Lincoln, and the decay of civic life. You're welcome. I know this is the content everyone wanted.

Since almost every conspiracy theorist eventually lands on “the Jews control the world”, I want to shoutout that conspiracy theorist party-goer in Gaddis’ Recognitions who won’t shut up about the Swiss running the world.

Oh no, what if they make an adjudicated rapist the standard bearer of their party? 😱
The funniest reactions to the elections are the Republicans on Twitter saying stuff like “well after Jay Jones won, we are never taking scandals seriously again, we will nominate candidates who have no morals and say anything!!!” - like I’m just not sure anyone is going to notice the difference

I wish young women (and other demographics who overwhelmingly vote Dem) received the same “you may not like their choice of candidate, but we need to listen to their concerns” discourse framing from legacy media and online punditry that MAGA voters get

When they saw the honored flag they had not seen for years!
Hardly could they be restrained from breaking forth in cheers!
While we were marching through Georgia!

Also, no Georgia Democrat has won a nonfederal statewide office since 2006 before now!
