New data from New Leaf Expansion Project, which distributed $1M from 100+ donors to people experiencing homelessness in Vancouver.

The results were mindboggling.

21% higher wages
40% more nights in stable housing
85% more savings after 12 months

Direct cash works.

The bullies that went after first the Bendigo and now Adelaide writers festival for daring to include a Palestinian voice don't give a fuck that this will wreck the festival. They just want to make it clear they'll do this again and again, so you're best complying in advance.

NPR reported today that the overwhelming majority of the aid Israel is allowing into Gaza is *commercial.*

In other words, Israel is banning free food and shelter aid and only allowing in goods that Palestinians have to buy.

With money they don't have.

Why does this not surprise me? Not only the costs in time and money of grant applications, but also the bureaucratic stifling of research creativity.
I'd like to see a 'basic income' approach for research - give researchers a sum they choose how to spend, including pooling it with collaborators.
This report in Nature on the costs of competing for & administering scientific grants is shocking: "In other words, European taxpayers will have spent more on the funding process than on the funding itself, and the scientific ecosystem has been drained." www.nature.com/articles/d41... 🧪
Point of no returns: researchers are crossing a threshold in the fight for funding
With so little money to go round, the costs of competing for grants can exceed what the grants are worth. When that happens, nobody wins.

It would be practically and legally impossible to hold a royal commission that goes anywhere near the actions or motivations of the accused killer, before his criminal proceedings are concluded, which could take years. That limitation would render the royal commission itself pointlessly premature.

The Israeli government says the organisations have not met new requirements, which include recognising Israel as a Jewish and democratic state and banning any so-called "de-legitimisation" of Israel.
