The 1st day of Intro Bio is about the expts showing DNA is the heritable material, not protein which seemed to make more sense. Every year I emphasize the importance of discarding pet hypotheses, that Nobel Laureates can be wrong (or Nazis!), & that science is political. This yr got a 2025 update 🧪

It bears repeating that nearly the entire US enterprise in science and technology has been irreversibly gutted. This is shocking.
All this loss has occurred without any real benefit to the average US citizen. Except we now have the biggest, best funded secret police force perhaps ever.
Yay for us!

I’m sorry but the “should scientists be activists” train left the station for the last time when we started spending billions to build concentration camps. I feel like you guys are engaging with the science stuff as though the camps thing is like, happening on a different TV show

The practical upshot is that justice delayed is justice denied; or to be more precise, a lab which had to fire all of its researchers and halt work on groundbreaking research isn't going to be able to ever restore itself to the same position it would have been without a multi-year pause in funding.
TL;DR: 5 justices say Trump doesn't have to immediately restore the funding, but 5 *also* signal that the underlying directives are unlawful.
That sends a fairly strong (if mixed) message that Trump will lose these cases *eventually,* but only once they're brought in the Court of Federal Claims.
That sends a fairly strong (if mixed) message that Trump will lose these cases *eventually,* but only once they're brought in the Court of Federal Claims.
Splitting 5-4 (with Chief Justice Roberts joining the three Democratic appointees in dissent), #SCOTUS grants *partial* stay to Trump administration in NIH funding case; holds that challenges to grant terminations (but *not* the underlying guidance) need to be filed in the Court of Federal Claims:

Really important article in the NY Times today about cuts to NIH diversity grants, featuring a profile of Ashley Albright @aralbright.bsky.social who is an amazing and super inspiring cell biology postdoc whose K99 was prematurely terminated.
“If you cut out these diversity measures, you're going to make science full of people that are very elite…Full of people who have grown up with a large amount of privilege, who were able to work in a lab in high school because their dad was a prof at Cornell.” 🧪

The ideological cancellation of $800 million of scientific research grants because they supposedly focused on DEI was just backed by the Supreme Court. This is horrific on so many levels.
Supreme Court allows NIH to stop making nearly $800M in research grants for now
But the court, in its emergency docket order, also left in place by a 5-4 order a lower court ruling that threw out NIH memos that enforced the administration's policies.

to the PIs, is it advisable going on job market this fall when things are seemingly falling apart, or riding the postdoc wave for longer (while funding lasts) for some semblance of stability?

If you work on climate change and health, but are striking out in the current funding landscape, this might be the job for you. We're looking for someone who can do a lot of work in one year to launch something big. If you think that's you, take a look at our lab website, and then drop me an email:
We may have a one-year postdoctoral position opening! There is a lot to be upset about these days, especially if you're paying attention. Remember that there have been times when things seemed hopeless in the past and good has overcome evil. We can do it again, but we need everyone on board.
