Had a blast at Kidical Mass in Orléans! 🚲
Families out riding together, decorating bikes, and filling the streets with colour and energy. Thanks Convent Glen Orléans Wood Community Association, Matt and Rob, for hosting. I was proud to support this awesome event!

Speed enforcement cameras work to keep neighbourhoods safe by reducing dangerous speeding. I and @catmckenney.bsky.social ask you to write to your MPP and Premier Ford to oppose legislation that would ban their use in Ontario cities.

Some seriously big energy at #KidicalMass from the #BikeHfx crew today! Today was a strong reminder that society undermines the strength of our kids. These kids WANT TO MOVE! But we limit them so aggressively through poor policy & design decisions. Grateful for the organizers & marshalls!

Carrying a weapon conveys power over others by threat of lethality.

Being threatened by a driver of a multi-ton vehicle is no different. Change my mind.
I get the urge to compare road violence and gun violence. It can help people see the ways road violence has been accepted and unquestioned in useful ways.

But a key difference bw road violence & gun violence (in Canada at least) is that it's easy to live everyday life without toting a gun around.

Community: Cycling Gladstone is unsafe and horrible.

#OttCity: We propose worse.
The Gladstone/Percy cycling study originally proposed contra-flow bike lanes on Percy and bike lanes on Gladstone.

Now, instead of a simple left turn onto Gladstone, the proposal would have a north-westbound biker go from Percy to Flora, Bay, Gilmore, Bronson, Christie, Arthur, THEN Gladstone.

I will always proceed though a worksite vs risking my life with drivers on a multi-lane road like Preston.

We need a shift in #Ottawa where residents(esp children) are given the same rights as construction workers around car traffic.

A net-good #Ottawa sidewalk story 🧵1/2

Good news: In time for the school year, new sidewalks! Used by 100’s of Broadview and Nepean HS students daily. Kudos to planners for 2m sidewalks, 3m car lanes, reducing crosswalk distance and slowing down drivers.

Canada has a #StopDeKindermord history too, complete with stereotypical "sorry".

The difference between Canada and the Netherlands: we didn't see widespread change and action decades ago. We're still asking for it today.

A trip to a museum on transit for a family of 4 would cost $32. Driving and parking $6.

We need to flip the this, make the externality costs of the later pay for the former.
What’s your urbanism take that the general public would absolutely hate?

Mine is that making driving or parking less convenient can be incredibly helpful to public transit and active transportation.

Do you think Speed Cameras are a cash grab?

Is doing the local speed limit hard?

Then you want Intelligent Speed Adaptation! Talk to your MP now.
My least popular (and most correct) view is that cars should be automatically limited to the local speed limit. Put the pedal to the floor and you still can't go over 25mph in a residential area.

(15 in Manhattan btw)
There is no possible justification for limiting e-bikes to 15mph but not cars.

I witnessed the aftermath of a cyclist getting hit by a car turning right yesterday, just a couple of blocks from where Saloni Aitawadekar was killed while crossing the street near City Hall.

It’s time to seriously consider banning right turns on red in Ottawa’s downtown core.

Great messaging from the City! This is a step in the right direction to reducing public subsidy of private property storage. 1/3
Are you tired of circling the block trying to find a parking spot, #OttCity?

We are here to help by making parking easier to find.
Starting in September, paid on-street parking will be changing in select high-demand areas.

I am 100% ready to join you to “ban right on red”. Montreal has this, but only because that’s the way it always was. Other cities elected to allow right turns on red, to allow for greater traffic flow. And look who’s paying the price. Day after day, another tragedy. Make this an election issue.
The cyclist got hit at the exact same intersection I was about to bike by, it could have been me. We need to consider banning right on red in all downtown intersections. You shouldn’t be taking your life in your hands every time you walk or cycle. A woman got killed crossing the street a block away.

Imagine sidewalks were always there and the city wanted to pull them out. Would the anti-sidewalkers cheer this on?

Probably not, but change is harder for some. I hope the city is able to convey why the community needs this in simple terms. And then get on with it.
This is what happens when sidewalks and traffic calming, as part of an evidenced-based policy with #VisionZero principles, comes to an inner urban area of 1950s homes in Ottawa.
