Is welfare spending ''out of control''?

It's estimated to be 10.8 per cent of GDP this financial year.

That's just 0.8 per cent of GDP higher than in 2007-08, and total welfare spending has actually fallen fallen by 1.2 per cent of GDP since 2012-13⤵️ buff.ly/s5mz97u

Tuesday November 28, 1854.

Mr Peterson, Sir John's third cousin once removed, looked astonished to hear my revelations.

"So he murdered his wife?" he gasped.

"I believe so."

"And he can't be brought to book?"

"My close contacts in the Metropolitan Police say not."

"Oh. Oh, my..."

I say this mostly because Reform and certain journalists friendly to them seem determined to start a “white flight” narrative since net migration has dropped so dramatically.

It’s not true. It’s not even close to true.

Caught lobbying for cash or bullying in Parliament? You can still return to the House of Lords - for life.
No real consequences. No accountability.
Sign now to kick rule-breakers out for good.

Ban rule-breaking peers from the House of Lords.
Lords found guilty of serious misconduct – like bullying or lobbying for cash – still get to make our laws. I just signed a petition to kick rule-breaking peers out of the Lords for good. Want to add...

Finally got round to giving @benansell.bsky.social's latest. It's also one of his very best - especially if you want to understand the extent to which Reform voters (often talked of as 'the people' and, apparently therefore, representative of all UK voters) are real outliers, culturally-speaking.

My carefully considered, nuanced and balanced policy view is that we should tax gambling profits, including sports betting, at like 98% and one executive's kidney per quarter.

I'm not sure having every UK mainstreet be three quarters Ladbrokes is good, actually.

It is thought removing the two child benefit cap will lift 450,000 kids out of poverty. And that is what got the biggest jeer of the day from the Opposition.

Just remember. They may be flailing, failing & fading, but a lot of them are still total bastards who regard poverty as a moral failure.

My Budget Day opinion:

Budget Day should be abolished. Performative nonsense that (by accident) leans into 'politics as entertainment'.

Measures should instead be announced when they are individually ready to be announced – at any time in the parliamentary calendar.

Shame on us!
How is this not the top story on every news bulletin?
This has been happening for years and instead of doing anything to protect children successive governments have made the situation worse. This isn't just on councils. It is part of failings on a State level.

But interesting to note the ‘upbringing’ bit.
