out of nowhere my kid laughed and said "I'm having a great time with you people" which might be the funniest thing you can say in a room containing only your parents

Nobody ever planted a tree in this photo. It was a working gravel pit 30 years ago.

We need to get over our obsession with planting trees and let nature do the job. The results are just SO much better.

It's also about realising we are not, in fact, central to everything. 🌍

DS9 was so funny and great with this, Weyoun was a one off character who died at the end of his episode and everyone was like damn Weyoun was so cool we love Jeffrey Combs and then everyone realized it was Star Trek and you could do whatever you want so we got nine Weyouns running around
So many great examples of exactly this. Another favorite: Andrew J. Robinson hired for a one-off on DS9 as Garak, kills it, and becomes one of the series' emblematic characters.

Alt: a close up of the character Garak, played by Andrew J. Robinson, from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, saying "It's insidious."

I think we know 2024's cop of the year!
“…an officer lost control of his motorcycle while attempting a trick, and severed his hand in the process. The motorcycle then continued moving into the crowd without him, crashing directly into an elderly couple and injuring several other nearby eventgoers.”

The Festival of Lights Parade was briefly paused after a police officer lost control of his motorcycle and it crashed into the crowd, injuring at least 10 individuals.

If the killing of the UnitedHealth CEO has taught us one thing, its that we're maybe not as divided as we think. When 90% of people empathize with the people the CEO exploited more than with the CEO, it should tell our politicians something

i’m going to be honest: i’m not really interested in scientific studies proving that trans women aren’t uniquely advantaged over cis women in sports. it will change nobody’s mind. transfem sports bans were never about science in the first place, they’re about revulsion
