I’ve been a FreeTaxUSA proselytizer for years and years and I strongly encourage everyone to make the switch. same kind of step by step “for dummies” interface, even for my complicated freelancer taxes, and you don’t have to give your money to one of our most evil lobbyists
TurboTax is about to be integrated into ChatGPT, where customers will be guided through tasks tied to their tax filings or financial profile by the AI chatbot.

TurboTax owner Intuit is also paying OpenAI more than $100 million a year to power AI agents.

This is one of the most important yet least told stories in Seattle over the last 5 years: the steady scaling back of transit service, even as we expand light rail. We need to bring transit back closer to more people.
Seattle used to fund so much transit service until covid (and jenny durkan)

In 2019, almost 75% of the city lived within walking distance of a bus every 10 mins or better. Today, it's only like 50%!

Time to get the buses running again!

I will never forgive the greedy freaks who destroyed the PAC-12.

Flipping through the channels looking for an interesting game, which previously would have been something like Colorado-Arizona or WSU-Cal or UW-USC and…there’s *nothing* compelling.

There’s a widespread, leftishly-coded take that young people’s gambling+meme stocks activity is a result of their fiscal precarity, that they “know the economy won’t work for them”

It’s pretty much the opposite! this is a prosperous generation and gambling is a sign of their prosperity
“The youth are so into gambling/meme stocks because they see the economy just doesn’t work for them and want lotto ticket payoffs”

Also with better wage growth at the lower end than any generation has at the high end.

Maybe it’s just that young people like gambling!

Today’s fun tax tip…

(It’s a similarly daft situation that railways pay tax on fuel/energy but airlines don’t pay any tax on their aviation fuel, a huge hidden subsidy)

Private jets don't pay fuel tax. Now I don't either.

'Alone and warming his five wits, the white owl in the belfry sits.' Tennyson was a great fan of William Webbe who painted this exquisite picture in 1856. Though Webbe is included in Percy Bate's early study of the Pre Raphaelite movement, he remains a mysterious figure.

It turns out that “wear an inflatable frog costume and go downtown” is actually a really reasonable answer.

Essay-review: Andrew Katzenstein on Thomas Pynchon’s latest novel, Shadow Ticket — brisker than his other work; it’s full of his usual vaudevillian sensibility & addresses his favorite theme: how to live freely under powerful systems of control.

One of the many remarkable things about Against the Day is that in addition to its whole sprawling metaphysical philosophical historical thing, Pynchon does a pitch perfect parody of boys adventure books that impeccably ties into everything else. The effort behind all this is gargantuan.
