it does bum me out how many establishment Dems are willing to move to the right by throwing whole sections of the population to the wolves but not by at all altering their stance on gun control

Continuing the classic SciFi readings with A Scanner Darkly.

What a trip. The sense of grim despair in Fred/Rob’s world was palpable and inescapable.

The twist at the end, followed by PKDs dedication to the friends he had lost to this world was sobering.

Slowly making progress learning CAD again. I’d tried Fusion 360 and Solid Edge before, but felt I was constantly fighting the interface and limitations. I bit the bullet this weekend and started using FreeCAD, and honestly it’s a breath of fresh air. So nice using software that respects its users.

Dipping my toes back into reading recently, starting with some sci-fi classics. The Andromeda Strain was great, a tightly paced race against death, but the real winner was Lathe of Heaven.

It really grabbed me and I finished it in one sitting. I’ll be thinking through it for a while I’m sure.

Most people who’ve moved to Bluesky did so to escape the hostility towards them that Ed describes here

A platform that isn’t focused on mindless growth at all costs gives users a space to communicate and build communities
Newsletter: Our digital lives are unregulated growth-hacked ecological disasters. The modern tech ecosystem's growth-at-all-costs mindset is actively harming billions of people, pushing them toward authoritarianism for profit. We must fight back.

In the last year, I’ve spent about 200,000 words on a kind of personal journey where I’ve tried again and again to work out why everything digital feels so broken, and why it seems to keep getting wor...

As someone who grew up playing ADOM, Stone Soup, and Nethack, Path of Achra came at me like a laser guided missile locked on to my brain.

@ulfsire.bsky.social you’ve cracked the code to making digital drugs with this one. Now I just have to figure how to pitch it to my friends…

Made the realization Friday that Path of Achra is not actually a dungeon crawler game, but really a Balatro or Vampire Survivors-style engine builder with a dungeon crawler aesthetic. Once I realized that, I went from 2hrs of playtime to 20hrs by the end of the weekend.

For-profit healthcare should not exist. I don’t know what the alternative should be, single payer has its own issues, but this is untenable.
Storytime.

In 2005, my mom died from cancer, but the real cause was the actions taken by an insurance company 12 years earlier. What happened to her was evil, hard to identify or fight, and hidden from the public by legal mechanisms. Because of that, I have no idea how often it has happened.
