I'm not an expert, but it feels like a) high schools are pressured for test scores and graduation rates, so they coddle kids (one of mine was coddled) and b) higher education is a business; flunking students is bad biz. Cooperate and graduate.
And I don't know if the answer is: everyone is too traumatized to do work and we need to reinvent society. Or if it's more like: generations are losing their cognitive abilities and willpower due to destructive technologies. Or: we all have post-viral brain damage. Or: all of the above.

We home-schooled our children, but we supplemented with public schools. ;)
Even if there was any sort of academic benefit to homeschooling (there isn't), it would be completely offset by the social damage of being raised that way. School isn't just learning academic subjects, it's learning how to leave your home and participate in society.
