Elderqueer (he/him) out since the '70s. Former Chicago newspaper guy, from copy boy to editorial board via points between. Friend of facts, foe of fascists. At home in Key West, missing my late husband after 38 years together. 🌈
Have a sprig of cordyline to brighten your day. Heaven knows, anything is worth trying.

"There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there always has been. Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.' " — Isaac Asimov

In an attempt to counteract temperatures in the 50s, this ginger plant tried looking warm. Noble, but futile.

Yesterday's post was an end-of-year Easter egg. Out of 3,000+ followers here and on Bluesky, only one, an art connoisseur friend from Palm Springs, was sufficiently sharp-eyed to have found the anole hiding in plain sight. Well done, Joseph! @gayfineart.bsky.social

I subscribe to a nifty little daily newsletter about language — wordsmith.org — and the guy who runs it is smart in many ways. Today's installment was "nutation," from the Latin word for nodding, which has uses in physics, botany and physiology. The examples he cited gave me a laugh....

Jamaican caper isn't particularly associated with the holidays, but I think it looks festive enough to usher in a new year with a bang. Choose your explosives wisely.

Too many Chicago winters leave me with but one thought when I see a concentrated spot of yellow in an expanse of white. Here's to Chico, Nessie, Sam and Cookie, who all put up with Christmasy (but warm) doggy togs for walks to do their business in the snow.
