I've been hearing from a lot of creators of late that the non-licensed space for comics has been painful to operate in, and today on SKTCHD, I finally wrote about it with insight from a bevy of creators.

It is, as one creator put it, "a lot."
It's a high time for the direct market, but non-licensed comics — i.e. creator-owned + other original comics — are going through a "wildly unpredictable" period.

In this week's feature, I talked to creators about navigating this uncertain time, what's fueling it, and how it's affecting their plans.
“It's Wildly Unpredictable”: Creators on Navigating an Uncertain Time for Non-Licensed Comics - SKTCHD
It’s a great time for the direct market. 1 Comic shops are thriving, new readers are getting onboard, and veteran fans are excited as well. More than that, the comics themselves are good, which genera...

Two birds with one stone. Last night, @richardhowe.bsky.social & I finally met IRL, and I finally got to see LOCAL HERO, one of those films that slipped through the cracks for me. Not what I expected, and absolutely delightful. (I’m talking about the film, but you could say the same of Richard. 😉)
Can't wait to see my all-time favorite film, LOCAL HERO, at the @newbeverly.bsky.social with @brianschirmer.bsky.social tonight. If you haven't seen it & are in LA, do yourself a favor and check it out tonight or tomorrow night.

Not overly keen on living in a dystopian movie plot, on the whole.
Rewatching "Children of Men" for the 1st time in almost 20 years and OMG, the opening lines.

"Day 1,000 of the Siege of Seattle. The Muslim community demands an end to the Army's occupation of mosques...the deportation of illegal immigrants will continue."

The movie takes place in 2027.

So stellar to listen to director Philip Kaufman before a screening of his INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS last night at the Egyptian. By the time they had to wrap up, he was keen to keep talking for another two hours! I love the film — but I would happily have just listened to him for the runtime.

This seems like the most straightforward and also basically accurate message.
instead of saying this was good strategy, maybe senate dems should say: "the republicans were going to kill people by starving them to death, and because we aren't monsters, we decided to let this fight go. We'll keep fighting. Stop electing monsters."
