One practical reason it’s so important to draw the white supremacist and neo-Nazi ideology of Musk and Vance into the open is that it’s totally fatal to their political coalition. Re-polarizing nonwhite Americans against the GOP, as happened in the 1960s, is death for the party in modern America.

Always important to remember, when it happened, everyone knew how bad it was. They all needed time to create a web of justifications and excuses to justify or dismiss the gravity of it. The incoming president led a criminal attempt to overthrow the republic.
At the time, everyone, including Republicans, understood how bad it was. Then, brick by brick, they built a foundation of lies to justify doing what they know, deep down, to be wrong. Trump betrayed the country. And so do they.
