Today I was laid off from Dark Horse Comics. While devastating news, I'm so proud of what I helped make there and am grateful to have worked alongside such amazing coworkers and creators.

I'm not quitting comics yet, so if you or someone you know needs a savvy editor please reach out.

The Ultimates is the best ongoing comic on the stands right now. Issue #9 is stellar. No spoilers, but this Luke Cage story is superb. Anyone who says political commentary and comics don't mix can take a hike. @denizcamp.bsky.social @comicbookkid.bsky.social #FedericoBlee

Every comic book retailer will say this to you.

Pre-orders are vital because they show interest and enthusiasm, and that leads to sales.

There are entire companies that we order nothing from because they get no pre-orders.

This is why Pros keep going on about pre-orders so much.
When I was a buyer at a large indie, my rule of thumb was:

1 preorder: huh, let me take a closer look at this one
2 preorders: we need to stock this book
3 preorders: we should order enough to face this out
4+ preorders: this should be on front-of-store display
More detail: When booksellers get pre-orders, it's a quantitative and qualitative signal that there is like *something here* about a book. The avalanche of new books out there is hard to communicate if you're not in the industry, and pre-orders are one of vanishingly few signals. It is a real thing!

This is how you become a writer: just pick one of the things that is deeply wrong with you. Make it a character. Now send it on a self-help journey or try to kill it. Now call it a book.

Worth remembering that a lot of bookstores participate in Small Business Saturday, the day AFTER Black Friday. Go to your local indie bookstore then and load up!
Hard to keep up with replies to this. Direct any outrage toward the incredibly doable action of purchasing physical books by living authors from local bookstores. Bookseller friends tell me Black Friday has totally been devoured by online giants and local shops primarily get last-minute panic buyers

There are currently only 22 films streaming on Netflix made before 1980 and not a single one made before 1960, with the oldest film on the platform currently being PSYCHO. I know I’m a broken record but: buy physical media, support your local library, etc etc
