Fermi Estimation Day is one of my favorite days of the whole semester.
Mostly because I just pull up a random clip of "Check Out" from The Price is Right, dominate it in front of my students, and then explain to them why it has a shockingly high win rate.

I hate re-litigating old election stuff, but...does anybody actually have any data that the "Kamala is for they/them" ad was effective? Even bad data? Is there any empirical argument for it, or is it just purely elite vibes?
Like, my God, show me some data, any data that claims that ad was effective. Have I missed it? Or are all our elites just assuming that trans kids in high school sports was everyone's biggest issue rather than inflation and affordability because it's where they can afford to focus THEIR neuroses?

Best exercise I've done is have students ask an LLM something they're personally experts in (they're all 18-19, so these are all accessible topics).
One student this year asked for Top 10 MLB players in 2025. LLM gave a bunch of plausible names...and then Rafael Devers. Asked students why. (1/2)

It takes being an expert in some area to get a sense of where LLMs fall tragically short there.
Unfortunately, they also have a habit of making everyone perceive themselves an expert without any expertise needed to discern the outputs. It’s easy for it to feel like magic in these circumstances.
