I will likely have to pay a lot more tax because of tomorrow’s Budget. Happy to. I just hope the tax rises have been properly thought through and that they don’t hamper growth. If you ask people to pay more, they can reasonably expect to be contributing to an improving society.

Jenrick will fake-outrage himself into an aneurysm at this rate. He needs to step away from the stage and go and have a long think about how 14yrs of Tory austerity, Brexit and pisstaking irresponsibility led to this gigantic back catalogue of failure.
(And the BBC would do well to point that out)

Totally untrue garbage from @thetimes.com & @dailymail.co.uk today - smear dressed up as journalism. Some facts:
- There is no “£900 desk”
- my constituency office has Ikea desks/chairs
- we significantly underspent the new MPs allowance to set up an office

Treasury minister leading budget plans spent £900 on desk
Torsten Bell, who is working with Rachel Reeves to fill a £30 billion hole in finances, also used his parliamentary expenses to claim £600 for three chairs

Why are the American president's claims about autism the first item on British news bulletins?

He's not our president, the advice doesn't apply here and he's not presented any evidence to support his assertions.

So why spread these claims? What make this the biggest story in the UK?

How many times in the past week have you heard UK broadcasters say “Pakistani grooming gangs” despite 2% of Pakistanis being responsible for child sexual abuse?

88% are white British.

How many times has Musk or Farage been the headline?

They are openly normalising far right narratives.

Farmers who are angry at inheritance tax changes should instead focus their efforts on pushing the govt towards closer UK-EU ties.

Restored UK-EU economic relations would remove the Brexit barriers damaging farm profitability and increase tax revenue to reduce the need for inheritance tax changes.

To be clear:

It's £1m untaxed, plus £325k of standard tax free inheritance.

You can double that if the farmer is married.

So farmers can hand down £2.65m tax free, and their kids pay 20% on everything else.

Tax on your job is 40% over £50k

"Land owner" is not a job

🧵
This will affect fewer than 500 farms, and the IFS says farms are "still more generously treated than they used to be in decades past"

It's just closing a loophole that's been used to avoid inheritance tax, and which pushes up farm rents and makes it harder for 76% if farmers to make a profit.
