When I was 17, there was a 13-year-old girl who had a crush on me. She was not shy about it and probably would have done anything for me.

Even then, as a confused teenaged boy in the early 90s, I thought the age gap was too weird.

It is easy not to be a predator. Or even just vaguely skeevy.

It's not even Thanksgiving, and our local Tim Hortons is putting doughnuts in Christmas boxes. This is clearly creeping Canadianization of our culture.

I have an engineering degree, and the math classes were some of my biggest hurdles... But for years I've had a steady customer-facing job where I've been requested for meetings & trainings because I can deal with subjects at the audience's level, including nontechnical people, without talking down.
I've spent 20 years helping new engineers start careers, tip from a top recruiter: there's never any shortage of people who can write code that works (or do the art needed, etc), her challenge is finding people who can do that AND anyone wants to work with, friendly, communicate, take feedback

It's the "spiral" motif. Anglosphere culture has had "spiral" overcoded as "mystic" for all history. Tornadoes, hurricanes, whirlpools, sunwheels, tops, sacred geometry, Scooby Doo intro segments. They hunger for the hour to come around at last

I have long had a pet theory that adolescent boys, worried that they have nothing that makes them stand out, choose one obsession. Some memorize baseball stats, some get into cars, some are rock nerds. (1/7)
... likening its obsession with canon, continuity, and the "exhaustive" cataloguing of things and places that don't exist with a kind of tyranny.

The "clomping foot of nerdism."

This is all correct.

Adam Smith's *other* (earlier) major work was his Theory of Moral Sentiments, which posits that we do good things because we want most other people to like us and not dislike us (1/)
Shittification and shareholder return

A rehash of an old thread

Why is everything crap. Well, here we learn why Adam Smith was an early Marxist, in that though he had great faith in markets

He had zero faith in merchants

And the reason why, is why no one answers your helpline

The discourse around the idiot complaining about Heathrow is a depressing reminder of how quickly a discussion can go from "This American is an idiot" to "This person is an idiot because they're American."
