-- I'm a criminal justice and public health scholar interested in the intersection of health and the criminal legal system, especially substance use, harm reduction, and reproductive justice. This year I left my tenured Assoc. Prof. position to work for a research & evaluation nonprofit. It's great!
In "my brain can find something interesting in any task," I'm fascinated by the difference in two of my research sites re: surnames. Both sites have enrolled roughly the same number of people, but one site has very few duplicate surnames while the other has tons.

People who use drugs are human beings, therefore they have human rights.

We applaud the BC Human Rights Commissioner for sticking to the science and being an unequivocal champion for the rights of our patients.

Stop it with all this homophobic, transphobic, body shaming shit. All you’re doing is communicating to people who deserve your solidarity that you’re not on their side.

We are responsible for deaths around the world as we withdraw aid and spinup wars. Don't even make me think about what is happening to our health care system and the horrifying impacts that will have around the country. People are afraid to visit us, for work or travel. It isn't safe.

i remain shocked at just how badly elite higher ed admins have stewarded universities. these presidents and chancellors and provosts, supposedly accomplished people, have collectively overseen a staggering nationwide collapse in every respect.
One reason why elite schools (Columbia, Brown, Cornell) caving to Trump’s illegal impoundment and extortion is so galling — a betrayal, really — is that they would have won had they fought. By giving up, they guaranteed every other school will have to fight harder.

Alice is the one who taught me the power, joys, nuances and challenges of online disability communities--at a time when my own disability was making me more housebound.

I remain forever grateful to her, for showing me what could be possible, but also what remains to be done.
Watching disabled people around the world mourn Alice is a reminder of the good aspect of the internet. 30 years ago, few people outside of SF would ever have known Alice existed. I never would have met her. The internet connected us all. Let’s honor Alice’s memory by using that power and community.
My social media is wall-to-wall love for the incomparable Alice Wong, and I need more words. What captures sadness and/also affection for a community that knows what's been lost?

A lot of education discourse is at root an inability to decide whether the purpose of our education system is to 1) teach material and measure learning 2) reward students who work hard 3) separate the smart kids (destined for smart guy jobs) from the dumb kids (destined to serve the smart guys)

My son enjoys these "Junior Genius Guides" by Ken Jennings (yeah, that Ken Jennings!) and right now he's reading one about the human body, so he goes:
"I just learned something about myself. You know how sometimes I act like a cat?"
"... sure."
"That means I have... clin-i-cal ly-can-thro-py."

Lately I've been really angry about how much bad behavior is tolerated and enabled in academia. Thinking about how everyone knew a prof at MSU was retaliating against female students who rejected him but it still took at least 7 years to get him out. Thinking about weaponized incompetence.
"I could be a mentor to this very sharp person but as they aren't interested in me romantically I'm going to have to cut off all communication with them."

"Also, only men get the best mentors like me who can help them get into top journals. Clearly that's because men have higher IQ than women."

truly it is a mystery why women find it hard to get ahead in academia

He was president when I moved to the US.. in 8th grade. I have basically no impression of the man other than his scandals. As far as I am concerned, this is just more of the same stuff I always thought about him. 🤷🏼‍♀️
Do republicans yelling at us about Bill Clinton realize most of us were children during his administration and legally prohibited from voting? lol

This is supposed to be some kind of gotcha? If he did bad things throw him in jail. I do not have Bill Clinton flags in my boat. (I do not have a boat).

Finally sat down & learned how to make seamless patterns, so now I can make my own texture mats and scale them to any size I want for my pottery 🥳 Here are my first two patterns! The engraved areas leave a bit of texture but it wipes away easily with a sponge once the clay firms up.

I was so not ready for this to cross my feed on twitter. Alice was a fire & force & even tho our DMs were infrequent, she was a huge support & encouragement. I was working on an Alice colorway & a blanket for her to celebrate her 50th. I didn't work fast enough. Rest in power, Alice. ✊🏾💔

Damn, what an irreplaceable loss.
💔 Alice Wong’s last words: “Don’t let the bastards grind you down.”

We can never thank Alice enough for fighting all the good fights and especially all the hard fights. We all learned so much from your brilliance, your courage, and your indefatigable leadership. We will never forget you.

Because I work so interdisciplinarily and have gotten leadership rules formerly only ever held by natural scientists and engineers, I have had some extremely funny conversations where we're just talking past each other because of this dynamic
Hell, STEM faculty often don't know external funding isn't a thing in the humanities

Huh. Randomly thought to take the kids to see a movie but there's nothing for little kids in any theaters around us, which seems.. unusual? I feel like there's always been *something* before, even a re-showing of an older film. 🤔

WE WON. I am *begging* you to take note of who did this. *Not* UCLA admin—they’re still scuttling around behind closed doors, attempting to appease—but FACULTY AND STAFF, led by AAUP.

We were granted our preliminary injunction! @aaup.org
