Bill Labov died this morning. I'm not coherent enough to talk about how important and influential and brilliant he was. I am very sad.

I was so lucky to know him, and I am grateful every day that he (and Gillian, and Walt, etc) built an academic field where kindness is expected.

Trump's economy is being held up by a massive AI bubble.

A recent study found that of 300 companies that owned generative AI tools, 95% reported zero return on their investments.

We will not entertain a bailout of these companies should this bubble pop.

Does anyone have like... a list of discourse markers? (asking for a student looking at UM + discourse, and is wanting to know what all counts: e.g. um but, um and, um yeah)

Today there was an attempted ICE raid in Bensonhurst & community members showed up. Even though NYPD collaborated with ICE by trying to disburse the crowd; community members stood their ground & ICE left without kidnapping a single person per the rapid response groups I'm on. We protect us!

Wait uh if you watch through to the end of the clip THEY TRIED TO BUY TACOS FROM A SHOP WHERE THEY HAD PREVIOUSLY KIDNAPPED A WORKER, WHO IS STILL DETAINED
I’m still struggling with the fact that ICE “brown shirts” went to a taco shop and thought they would get served.

F that!

Hold on “fairy liquid” is out there as an option and none of you fine people told me!? 🧼
For the last 17 years, I have been secretly re-washing the dishes after my wife does them. She just doesn't do it correctly. Water not hot enough/not enough fairy liquid to de grease properly. I often wait until she's asleep and then go down and do them so I can sleep soundly.

NEW: The first two years of Massachusetts' millionaire tax has raised $3 billion more than expected.

And rather than driving the rich away, IPS researchers found that the number of millionaires has *increased.*

The value of reading history is you know that in 1860 there were abolitionists who were so demoralized that they thought chattel slavery would be permanent. 5 years later those still alive had lived to see its end.

you know we used to have to do at least a little work to prove the connection between racism and transphobia
Nothing illustrates the arseholery of the IOC and the British Press more than the use of the image of a not-Trans woman to illustrate a story about trans women being banned (because there are no current trans women competing at this level)

This. Also “less lethal” rounds. If our government wants to disperse protesters, let them (1) fix the underlying policy that is being protested about and/or (2) arrest us one at a time. You run out of space to hold us or ppl to arrest us? Then I guess you have to pay attention and come back to (1)
When this is over, we need to ban tear gas as the fucking chemical weapon that it is.
Heartbreaking: Under Trump's ICE terror, a 2-year-old Chicago girl was tear-gassed while walking with her mom-burning eyes, screams of
'Ouch! Mommy!' This isn't enforcement; it's state-sponsored child abuse.

ICE deported him anyways.

They literally put a man who was at death’s door on a plane to Costa Rica.

Doctors there found he had encephalopathy, rhabdomyolysis and the inability to eat on his own.

What happened to him in ICE custody to cause this?
