Northwestern is deficit spending ~$10M/week to keep their research going while NIH invoices and new awards are not being paid. Admirable for NU, but not sustainable.
Northwestern has not received any NIH funds since March. No written communication about why or what can be done. Thank you Ben Singer for raising awareness at #ATS2025

All NIDA F31 diversity scholars officially losing their funding...

I barely have words.

Expected at this point but so so disappointing and unfair. We are effectively punishing some of America's best science students for telling the government they are from an underrepresented community.

ACTION ITEM-----ACTION ITEM

Implementation of Schedule F

This is what a lot of us have been worried about.

This allows for many civil service positions to replaced with political appointees. This could include NIH institute directors and even POs.

BUT THERE IS A COMMENT PERIOD...

Please consider making a public comment opposing the possibility of making NIH directors, program officers, and other staff (e.g. SRO, GMS) political appointees. This only took me ~90 seconds. Please repost. Thanks 👍

🚨This seems to suggest that no institution with any programs to enable diversity, equity, or inclusion towards any group can accept NIH grants. Anyone have insight into how broadly this is being interpreted?

Northwestern has not received any demands from the federal government related to the funding freeze. There is no negotiation. What are we waiting for? Who benefits?

Really helpful, practical article on 5 tips if your federal grant is terminated.

Summarizes from a AAAS webinar that had 2,000+ attendees.

Appreciate that it has lots of links for specific agencies too!
Five things to know if your federal grant is terminated
If you want to appeal the decision, know the rules that govern terminations, as well as the specific rationale given in your notice, science policy experts say.

I have learned that the directors of ALL: PREP, IMSD, and IRACDA programs across the country have received similar cancelation notices. This follows previous cancellations of MARC and URISE programs. This further dismantles the mechanisms that enable scientific training opportunities for SO MANY.
You want to know the best way to show thanks for chairing a study section? Early the next morning sent them a termination notice for their PREP training grant.
Just completed day 2 of chairing a NIH study section. Brain is tired after intently listening and leading discussions of ~40 apps. So fulfilling to hear the passion people have for others' science, and heartwarming to see so many people who care about the training and environment of others 🫶 (299!)

The NIH study section I'm serving on for student/postdoc fellowships has been rescheduled for late April (good). But the diversity fellowship apps have been eliminated from the review list (very bad). Extremely frustrating that they couldn't even be reclassified as standard fellowship apps.

As a follow-up to the Big Brother insanity, I have heard from several sources that some institutes are encouraging their program officers (PO) to have conversations with applicants and grantees in their cars (presumably to avoid conversation monitoring).

I have confirmation from several sources now that all T32s, many F30s and F31s, and most or all Center awards (P30, P50) have been terminated at Columbia.

This is quite damaging to research and to individuals.

This is pure terrorism and cannot be legal. But litigation will take time...

People have overheated imaginations about what is happening at Columbia!

Someone asked me today after synagogue whether people on campus knock off my yarmulke. I told him that what has happened instead is that my yarmulke has blown off & 5 people rush to give it back to me.
The notion that this administration was stripping Columbia of its medical research grants in order to combat antisemitism would be more credible if 1) there were any tangible & ethical requested steps & 2) they were not attempting to decimate research on several other fronts
