American politics makes a lot more sense when you realize that the GOP is afraid of pissing off the GOP base, and the Dems are afraid of pissing off the GOP base, but neither party is afraid of pissing off the Dem base.

liberals and conservatives alike talk about defunding the police and decarceration as if these are extreme, radical, unthinkable ideas— but truly what is more extreme, radical, and unthinkable than what's happening *right now* in our police state.
This week on Reveal: A ‘Goon Squad’ of sheriff’s deputies roamed Rankin County, Mississippi, beating and choking people until they confessed to drug crimes.
Signs of the violence went ignored for years.

the thing about us evangelicalism is at it’s core it’s antinomian
From the outside US evangelicalism is a very puzzling religious group because ostensibly they are very concerned with the moral teachings of a publicly accessible text but also they seem to have inferred completely the opposite lessons from that text than what everyone else thinks is the plain read.
so my town has been hosting an emergency food drive for snap recipients. the town, high school clubs, the Y, the churches (Episcopal, Presbyterians, Lutherans, Baptists, Unitarians, and the Catholics) & the synagogue, are involved.
You know who isn't participating? the fucking evangelicals.

People on the Left really do need to read Nineteen-Eighty-Four and grasp Orwell's description of 'doublethink'. Doublethink is one of the most useful political concepts ever devised. It is the basic mechanism underlying political reaction. From something I wrote years ago:

It’s shit like this that makes me think the GOP doesn’t care about winning elections and they’re just not planning on having them. Because no one who thinks they have to win elections does this.

It’s only distinct from the far right’s reactionary nostalgia in that the forces being blamed are neoliberalism and capitalism rather than liberalism and racial pluralism. But the resentful paranoia about the modern world is unmistakable on both sides, even if certain explanations are taboo here.

Nuremburg trials is the moderate position
He said that the agents would throw food at them to eat. The agents threatened to withhold food for a week and to beat him up if he didn't sign deportation papers. He said he saw others refuse and get beaten/receive no food. He signed because he was afraid.

its a film whose whole is less than the sum of its parts
like eggers' northman, toro's frankenstein just isnt sufficiently re-imaginative enough to justify its retelling (unlike say lion king or romeo+juliet)
it is somehow both too faithful and thus trite, and deviates in ways equally uninspired

I reviewed the muddled mess that is Guillermo del Toro's FRANKENSTEIN. Beautifully lit but poorly framed, exquisitely costumed but burdened by shaky CGI, and above all, a defanged and sentimentalized adaptation of Shelley's novel.

I think we underestimate the importance of low-rent philosophical idealism for fascism, which always claims that will or vision triumph over material conditions.
Many people are saying (that America has become dominated by New Thought as the new national epistemology, and this prefigures everything from the rise of fascism to the social-economics of the AI industry)
Someone on here (was it you @vaporlight.bsky.social?) said something along the lines of "all fascism is THE SECRET" and yeah, basically!
