So quiet. You can hear the snow cascading off of the branches above... as a male Ladder-backed Woodpecker meditates during a break in the storm while clinging to a spot in dappled light on a Ponderosa Pine tree with his eyes mostly closed and his floof fully on, staying warm and dry under a large branch. Zen birding. Have a sweet Saturday peeps!

The scientific name is even better “Haematortyx sanguiniceps” which translates as Blood-Quail Blood-Head! 🩸 I don’t think you can get more extreme than that!
