The bird herself stands at a 3/4 angle to the camera with her head pointed slightly up. Her light brown wings hang down at her sides, in the way of many thrushes, and her tail is foreshortened and angled upward, away from the camera. She is slightly floofed so her spotted breast is very clear. She is gently backlit so she is edged in soft light. The background is unfocused gray and light yellow-green.

This bird has a light gray back, long light green legs disappearing into lightly rippled water, a reddish neck that grows more red toward the head, a nice red-orange crown, a long dark daggerlike beak, and a bright yellow eye. His feathers are standing on end from his tail to his crown, making him look like he just got out of the shower.

This is a small round bird with a faint yellow wash across her breast and belly, light brown streaks on her breast, a sweet cinnamon crown and eye line, and a neat short sharp beak. The background is composed of out of focus brown palmetto leaves.

This handsome intense egret is photographed against light colored water on an overcast day and his colors are all very muted because of the low light. Although the bird is overall very dark, colors can be seen in his feathers: deep blues and purples mark his wings and his rump is somewhat lighter in color. But his shoulders and neck and head are unimaginably dark and deep red-purple, nearly black. But his eye! It is bright yellow-white and picks up the bright calm water surrounding the creature.

Yesterday was overcast but the birds didn’t seem to mind #birds
Front view of a Forster’s tern hovering while scanning the pond for lunch. The camera looks right down the bird’s long axis so all you can really see is (1) the head, which is turned to the left and down, and which features a nice dark eye spot and sharp black beak on a mostly white creature; (2) the wings, which are lifted in perfect symmetry to their maximum upward position and are edged in dark gray; (3) the tail, which is fanned out maximally in a neat white isosceles triangle behind the bird; and (4) the legs, which hang in a relaxed state, feet turned slightly inward, symmetric. Symmetry is the word for this photo. The background is steel blue cloudy sky.

This bird is very unusually colored; he has a pale chalky blue and tan back, steel blue undersides, a reddish neck, and dark green legs. His beak is light at the base but is mostly dark overall, and you can see a reflection of the tip of his beak. The water is calm and light blue.
