Little blue heron flying to the right over blue water. The lower half of the bird is cropped out of the photo and you can see his blue back and blue upper wing and the wingtip is curled up wavelike and is dark underneath. The shape and color of his dark underwing provides a kind of mirror image to his dark head, which is washed in deep burgundy. His blue back shows purple highlights. His beak is long and daggerlike and tipped in black and his yellow eye looks forward with great intention. The background is composed of bright blue sparkling water.

There was a small fire last weekend on the mountain I hike, so the fire crews were mopping up as I hiked by. Not too much burned, fortunately. Location: Cerro San Luis (Madonna Mtn), San Luis Obispo.

Two red CalFire trucks are parked on green grass at the side of a steep, wide trail going up Cerro San Luis under a bright blue sky. There had been a small fire that involved heavy, dead debris, so they had an extensive mop-up to do. Fortunately, not much damage. I'm thankful they were able to get up close to the fire location; not all trails are as easily accessible. San Luis Obispo, California CalFire firemen dressed in orange, red and yellow are working on extinguishing a fire on a steep mountainside on Cerro San Luis (Madonna Mountain) in San Luis Obispo. The fire was adjacent to a wide dirt trail which is wet from the water used to extinguish the fire. There is green brush, prickly pear cacti and eucalyptus trees at the fire location, and there had been a pile of dead debris as well which made for an extensive mop-up. The sky is a bright blue. San Luis Obispo, California.

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #WaterBirds, and I love it because I finally saw a loon for the first time on Monday. This Common Loon appears to be a juvenile. It was quite far, so the shots are cropped and not that sharp, but there it is, a lifer.

A leucistic California Towhee was quite happy to strut its stuff. Leucism, in which pigments are blocked from reaching feathers but eyes and bare body parts still show color, is not quite as rare as true albinism but is still quite unusual. #birds_matter #birds
