As you can see, this isn’t last week, or the week before. This is 1968 Minnesota, where snowstorms are the norm.

This story started out as a memory of snow. It turned out to be, as so much of my life was, about two sisters.

Here we stand, with our fifteen year difference. Me, totally, awkward in bell bottoms, cat eye glasses, and of course, a floral parka. At this age, I would have just started dancing. She appears confident as always, just visiting from her master’s degree studies in Hawaii. That fifteen year gap made me, in some ways, an only child. And although I never admitted it until she passed, it made her sort of a mother figure for me. She would be the one who walked me through that first horrifying flow of blood. Who explained things to me I could never ask my mother. It wasn’t obvious until I graduated from college, married, and my sister began to settle into her position at the World Bank, just how much of an influence she would be. I moved to NYC for a time, and when my marriage failed there, it was to my sister’s basement apartment in DC that I flew. After being mugged in New York, she was my safe haven. She then pointed me to a place there that presented dance, where I would soon become an interim executive director. It was Gloria (what a perfect name, right?) who first saw that opportunity, not me. When I moved to California with a new love and a new job, we became distant for a time, weekly calls becoming increasingly sporadic. But when I got sick and had to we leave work, it was Gloria who paid off my Miata and put me up for a year in her summer house on the Chesapeake Bay. (You’d think from earlier stories I’ve written here, I had a pretty independent life. I thought so too.) You might remember from an earlier story posted here a rug hooking of two ballerinas playing with tiny mice. That was Gloria too. When my sister died from metastatic breast cancer at 63, I thought surely my life was over as well. But she left me a legacy. I cannot say I used it wisely, and I cannot say I have ever fully recovered. But I am still here. I am still her sister. I am still grateful. And we are still making angels in the snow.

The sky is a beautiful blue with a few fluffy clouds, in the background low hills with water either side of a thin piece of land. In the middle and foreground is an Imperial Shag colony, the black and white adults mostly on the periphery as the downy brown chicks are big enough to be left while their parents fish. It was interesting that different penguin/shag colonies on different Islands had different main predators here there were Skua in great numbers - the brown birds seen in front of and mingled in with the colony. The chicks were now large enough to have little risk of being taken and killed but the Skuas harried chicks and adults alike to try to make them vomit up their fish dinners.

A Little Egret stands in shallow, dark rippling water, its slender black legs partially submerged. Its long white neck curves downward as it lifts a small silvery fish from the surface with its sharp black bill. Water droplets fall from the fish, creating tiny splashes and rings. The egret’s bright white plumage contrasts strongly with the dark water, and its reflection shimmers below in the moving surface.

Never seen Com. Merganser courtship display before, but I presume that's what this was about. There were some females nearby and these two males were making low noises and periodically thrusting their heads straight up and pointing their beak at the heavens. 😀 #BirdingHungary #ducks #waterfowl

Photo taken at Forest Farm NR - Cardiff - South Wales The UK Kingfisher is a small, brilliantly coloured bird often spotted as a fast-moving, electric-blue flash along rivers, lakes, and canals. Though they are quite small—roughly the size of a sparrow or robin—their striking colours and distinctive shape make them unforgettable. Here is a description of a UK Kingfisher designed to highlight its most recognizable features: 1. Striking Colours The Back and Head: The back, top of the head, and tail are a brilliant, metallic turquoise blue that seems to glow or appear as a vibrant streak when it flies. The Chest and Underside: The breast is a rich, warm chestnut-orange (or rusty copper) colour. Facial Markings: It has a white patch on its throat and a white patch on the sides of its neck, which contrast with its orange cheeks. 2. Unique Shape and Silhouette Long Bill: The most defining feature is its disproportionately long, dagger-shaped black bill. ♀️ Common Pochard (Aythya ferina). Although it has a huge range, this species is listed as vulnerable because of sharp population declines. And the population is 60 - 80% male. Nobody really knows why the females are disappearing faster then the males. #BirdingHungary #ducks #waterfowl
