My least photographed bird is the Henslow’s sparrow, seen in April 2024 and probably never to be seen again, at least not this clearly, for the rest of my birding days #birdoftheday #birds
Henslow’s sparrow perched, facing left. This is a small bird with a cinnamon back, streaked sides, a pale throat, nice dark crown stripes, and an orange-ish wash over the head and sides. He has a nice light-colored conical beak and is looking over his left shoulder. The background is bright unfocused green.

Bluebird, not blue #birds
Eastern bluebird perched on a post. The bird’s body faces right but her head is turned to the left, toward the light, so we get a nice profile. She has a mottled red breast and white underparts and a black beak and a nice white eyering. Her head and wings are light brown, not blue. The background is dark with some unfocused orange and green foliage.

Eastern wood pewee with no head, seen from the front. Ha ha no. It just looks like she has no head. She has rotated her head backwards and to the right as she follows flying insects from her perch. You can just see the tip of her beak off her left shoulder.

This is a sweet little shorebird with brown wings edged in white, a brown head with a light colored eyeline, a shortish black slightly droopy beak, and pale yellow-green legs. Late night heron. The last picture from a fabulous day of birding in south Georgia #birds
Great blue heron washing in calm water at twilight, facing right. The shot is mostly a silhouette of the long-legged, snake-necked, dagger-billed bird, but details of the bird can be seen if you look closely: the dark crown, the light shoulder patch, the bright eye. The water is calm and a nice reflection ripples gently beneath the bird himself. The water is colored light gray-blue to orange.

Apex predator of the Statenville boat ramp #birds
Little blue heron hunting, facing right. Despite the name, every feather on this bird is white. In the photo her snakelike neck and head head are held low and generally horizontally, and lower than her body, as if she is about to attack some small doomed thing on the ground. Her eye is yellow and her legs are faint yellow-green. The foreground and background are composed of soft dark brown ground, and the heron’s bright body contrasts nicely with it.

But you can see the bird’s ruddy barred breast, his dark wing flecked in white, his light brown crown, and his neat hooked beak with yellow cere (the upper part of the beak). His dark eye simply reflects the light.

The best backyard bird #birds
Juvenile eastern phoebe on a diagonal branch. His body faces to the left but his head is turned over his shoulder to the right. This is a small perching bird with a light gray breast and belly, with a faint yellow-green streak down the middle. His undertail is gray, his wings and his head are dark gray, and his beak is shortish and slightly hooked at the tip. His is watching for flying food. The background is unfocused gray and green.

First bird of the day. It was a very good day #birds
Juvenile little blue heron facing right. Despite her name, every feather on this long tall wading bird is white; her deep blue plumage will arrive by next summer. Her beacons bent in the basic heron S-shape and her yellow eye is focused on the dark water in front of her. Her bill is daggerlike and her legs are faint yellow-green. You can’t see the lower half of her legs because they are obscured by rock, but her bright white body contrasts nicely with the dark green-brown water behind her.

Sanderling doing what sanderlings do #birds
Sanderling running to the left along the very edge of the Atlantic. This bird is in her winter plumage which means white underneath and black flecked with white above. Her black eye reflects at the sun. She has a straight black beak about the length of her head and quick black legs, stretched out in a full run. Her wavy reflection shows in the super shallow water beneath her and a line of foamy surf runs along behind her. The far background is composed of wind-swept blue water.

After an hour standing at the side of the dirt road scanning for birds, it was time to go. I packed up and drove the truck to the end of the road and turned around. As I passed back by the pond I glanced over and to my wonderment this creature had materialized! rare bird alert #birds

Junior red tail. Only about 30% of red tailed hawks survive their first year. I think this one is going to make it #birds

I saw some pink birds yesterday #birds
Four roseate spoonbills roosting atop a pine. The two leftmost birds have their heads down and their wings up, and the rightmost two are relaxed. These are tall wading birds with long legs and long necks, pink body and wing feathers, white necks and heads, and bills that flatten out like serving spoons at the end. There is a fifth bird in the background and mostly obscured, this is a wood stork.

I was standing under a US highway overpass when I took this picture, traffic pounding overhead. This is how birding works. #birds
Female black and white warbler crawling up a tree, nuthatch-like. The bird is seen in profile on the left side of the tree. Spanish moss descends down the opposite side. The bird is tiny, and, true to its name, looks like a tiny referee. One of my favorite warblers ever.

Sweet lil South Georgia boy #birds
Male downy woodpecker perched on the end of a broken branch, facing up and to the right. “Our smallest woodpecker,” as Sibley puts it, has a white belly and black wings flecked in white. His black crown and black eye line mark his otherwise white head, but let’s not forget that sweet red patch near his nape. He is floofed out and may be a first-year bird. Also his beak is short and black and cute. The background is unfocused bright green foliage.
