Berkeley has a registry that tracks rents in all apartments built before 1995. For years rents shot up but since the housing boom of 2017 new leases have flatlined at $2,200 (not inflation adjusted) even as inflation, population & incomes skyrocketted

Bay Area Reporter @bayareareporter.bsky.social , our local LGBTQ newspaper, pulls no punches in its front page headline on how we feel about the Governor right now.

The article also has quotes from state legislators condemning the Gav's hateful comments.

Kidnapping an activist and jailing him in the middle of the night is a brazen act of authoritarianism.

Punishing dissent by revoking legal status is a dangerous precedent to set.
NEWS: Last night, the Department of Homeland Security detained a Palestinian who helped lead the Columbia encampment.

Agents told him his visa was revoked. He said he had a green card. They were confused—then said that was revoked too.

His attorney demanded a warrant. Agents hung up instead.

Together we can push back against the illegal arrest & jailing of immigrants & the threat to everyone's rights.
- Organize with groups in your community that are already doing the work on immigrants rights.
- Ask your state & local leaders to do the same.
- Contact your congress rep and Senators.
As a New Yorker, I just called Senator Gillibrand's office to demand she defend all of our civil rights by fighting for Mahmoud Khalil. I called Schumer's office, too, but they're not taking messages over the weekend. Will call in the morning. Find your reps here: reps.fyi

Columbia student and New Yorker, Mahmoud Khalil - who was targeted and detained for constitutionally protected speech - should be home with his 8 months pregnant wife today.

Not missing in ICE detention, unreachable by his lawyers.

In a shocking turn of events, many of the people who said they wanted "free speech" actually just wanted to be the ones in charge of which speech is free.
UPDATE—Mahmoud's attorney says they do NOT know where he is.
They were first told he was sent to an ICE facility in Elizabeth, NJ. But when his 8-month-pregnant wife tried to visit him, she was told he's not there.
They've received reports he may be sent as far away as Louisiana.

I couldn't agree more.

As legislators, trans people have so many issues we care about and want to pass policy on (infrastructure, housing, healthcare, etc.)

But as TRANS legislators, we must first and foremost stand defiantly against the efforts of our government to eradicate our community.

The president can veto or support legislation. He can make recommendations to Congress. But he doesn't have the unilateral right to change laws.

Trump has very little respect for the rule of law & our Constitution. He is moving us toward authoritarianism.

We must stop him.

This is the ethos of project 2025, dismantling the federal government by any means necessary
by freezing all federal grants, trump is fundamentally transforming the relationship between the executive and congress. he is asserting dictatorial authority over federal spending, transforming congress's lawmaking powers into advisory authority. it is a constitutional crisis

Tenant / Community Opportunity to Purchase Act laws give tenants & nonprofits the time to buy their homes when their landlord wants to sell.

They can often pay full market price, but need more time to put together a deal vs. a private investor.

This reduces risk of renovictions or rent increases.
The Los Angeles City Council has unanimously approved a motion to begin creating a policy that would give tenants the option to purchase their buildings.

The motion passed 12-0, with two members recusing themselves because they're landlords.

It is illegal (and evil) for landlords to discriminate against, evict, harass, etc. Palestinian tenants

Tenants in college housing are doubly protected via civil rights laws in education; eg schools (K-12 & higher ed) are legally (and morally) obligated to prevent harassment of Palestinian students
