Loeb's behavior "is opportunism wrapped in the language of dissent. Real scientific courage lies in following the evidence even into obscurity, not in chasing the headlines once others have done the hard observational work." 🧪👏

Reminder that the government is still, in fact, shut down and so Johnson's claims about not being able to swear her in during the shutdown have always been a lie.

Congrats to the long-awaited Rep. Grijalva!

So, the technology developed with stolen material, which puts content creators and developers out of work, is not generating profitable returns? Because it can’t actually replace human creativity and ingenuity? HUH. WEIRD.
An M.I.T. study found that 95% of companies that had invested in A.I. tools were seeing zero return. It jibes with the emerging idea that generative A.I., “in its current incarnation, simply isn’t all it’s been cracked up to be,” John Cassidy writes. https://newyorkermag.visitlink.me/mlYgP3
The A.I.-Profits Drought and the Lessons of History
Like the steam engine, electricity, and computers, generative artificial intelligence could take longer than expected to transform the economy.

Seriously @wired.com?!? You went with this headline when the lede says it's a totally natural comet? This is very bad #scicomm #seti clickbait 😡

Also, fyi, one loud alien conspiracy theorist vs. 100s of astronomers saying its always been a comet is not a "debate." I'm not linking to this piece

Double, double, toil and trouble; water plumes vent and hydrothermal systems bubble. Cool it with an ocean world’s blood; then the (organic mixture) is firm and good. 🥣🧙‍♀️

Hey, hey, remember when Ukraine *also* stopped sharing intelligence with Trump because it knew he would just tell Putin about it?

But sure, we're "the most respected, trusted country in the world" 🙄

Also, maybe stop all the murder on the high seas? Just a thought.

In the century leading up to 1975, nearly 6000 freighters went down in the Great Lakes.

The Edmund Fitzgerald was the last.

The last. In 50 years, not a single commercial freighter has been lost in the Great Lakes.

Why?

It's NOAA. Of course it's NOAA.

This is disappointing. The APS merged all of the regional Conferences for Undergraduate Women in Physics (CUWiP) into one conference in Colorado for 2026. This will make attendance for undergraduates a lot more expensive in terms of both money and time. ⚛️ 🎢 👩‍🔬 #WomenInPhysics

I heard about this at the Physics and Astronomy Conference. Undergraduates are rightly upset and so am I.

Those regional conferences made it so much more feasible for so many participants!

Dem leadership to voters: Do you want healthcare or to know who is taking your healthcare away?

Voters: Umm, actual healthcare, obviously.

"Leadership": *already walked away* Hmm, sorry, what, can't hear you...
Kaine on why he thinks just getting a vote on healthcare is a win: "We're the minority party, but everybody will get to see who is standing for them when it comes to lowering their healthcare costs"

THEY PEPPER SPRAYED A BABY

Please read this entire excellent piece by Caroline, which points out that a judge ordered the Feds (again) to stop doing **this exact kind of thing** and they are still continuing to do it all over Chicago
Arianna Sofia Veraza and her parents were driving to Sam's Club for milk, eggs and diapers yesterday when they heard helicopters and horns blaring yesterday. They had turned around to leave when a federal agent pepper-sprayed them through a car window.

Cowards. Idiots.

Millions have suffered for 40 days during this shutdown, and for what? A promise of a healthcare vote sometime soon? Millions will lose healthcare. Some will die.
