There’s going to be three companies left in America at this rate.
Netflix has won the bidding war to purchase Warner Bros. Discovery.

The sale is not yet finalized, as the U.S. Department of Justice could also interfere due to anti-trust concerns.

Not to bang on the ol’ cinema etiquette drum, but couldn’t resist the special case today of someone bringing and using their fucking laptop?!

The goal of Spotify’s algorithm isn’t to help you discover new music, its goal is simply to keep you listening for as long as possible. It serves up the safest songs possible to keep you from pressing stop.

all the news stories you see for "AI" products that seem more like advertisements are exactly that, they're hoping that if they keep astroturfing the idea that "AI" is real and everywhere and unavoidable it will eventually become true

Robert Redford had a long and storied career, the kind of episodic tale Robert Caro might write about, and you're going to hear all about it today. Rightly so. That said I'll just contribute that it's one of man's great ambitions to make it to 89 with unbelievable hair and god dammit he did that.

One of my favorite Robert Redford stories is when Mike Nichols was considering him for "The Graduate" and told him he needed to act like a guy who has struck out with women and Redford replied "what do you mean?"

I’m kind of speechless with this one. I can’t imagine the kind of person who continues to make the argument that it doesn’t count as real starvation if the kids were already sick.

A lot of mediocre middlemen who only care about numbers have long insisted on their necessity as gatekeepers between art and commerce, but the real truth of it all is that smart creative people who just want to make cool shit also happen to be very good at making cool shit that people want to buy.
The cool part about The Onion in print is people leave them around coffee shops and workplaces. Kids steal them and bring them to school. People love this shit, which makes the staff happy, which makes the paper better, which makes business better. We consult no algorithm. We just make fun of jerks.

A lot of the problems in the world can be traced back to numbers people slowly replacing people skilled and experienced in their area of business at the decision level because line going up became the product, not what they *actually* do, and you see some guys with really weird corporate histories.

BREAKING: Yuval Abraham, co-director of Oscar-winning documentary "No Other Land," says Israeli settlers beat his co-director Hamdan Ballal, injuring his head and stomach — and then Israeli soldiers invaded the ambulance he was in and seized him.

Ballal's whereabouts are now unknown.

a nice side effect of No Other Land winning an oscar is that the worst people on earth are incredibly mad about it.

It has come to my attention that not nearly enough of you know about Bernd das Brot, the German children's program about a clinically depressed loaf of bread who enjoys studying his wallpaper and eating gruel and whose catchphrases include "my life is hell" and "I would like to leave this show."

Joining in with 2024 films ranked.

Film viewing still down the last couple of years, but steadily climbing again.

Missed many things I wanted to see but we’ve got next year. And the year after. That’s probably it then though.

Favorite Steven Seagal (true) story:

A writer goes in to meet with him and he’s behind his desk crying.

“Are you okay?” the guy asks.

“I just read the greatest screenplay I’ve ever read in my life,” says Seagal.

“Who wrote it?” the guy asks. To which Seagal replies:

“Me.”
The good thing about Steven Seagal movies is that you can just turn off the shit and watch something else.

Completed FFVII: Rebirth. Here comes the emptiness after finishing a game. Hope it takes home GOTY.

Insanity that’s only two of the four discs from the original. How they’re going to fit the rest of the world (and current) into the third is beyond me, but I’ll be there day one.
