25 years of the Sinterklaasjournal - the daily 10 minute news show for kids in Nederland in the run-up to Sinterklaas on 5/6 December. Something always goes wrong with the boat on which Sinterklaas comes to Nederland from Spain, but there’s also a nod to real current events. This year, for instance

Whole fucking thing makes me sick to my stomach. An abject fucking liar, a man who lies as easily as he fucking breathes, threatening an organisation which strives for truthfulness. And plastic patriots like the Mail and Farage urging him on. Jackels.

Listening to @tomwgvdmeer.bsky.social & @twanhuijsmans.bsky.social discussing the elections on Stuk Rood Vlees [NL]. A point in defence of NL’s very pure PR system I had not thought of - with no districts it’s really hard to have a very small margins and therefore « hanging chad » arguments.

Rue de la Loi 159, now Justus Lipsius building. In 1882, an Antwerp lawyer was shot dead here by his wife's lover's brother who lured him there by posing as a steamship investor and gun collector. The 'Peltzer Affair' was turned into a hit play the following year and a Hollywood movie in 1934.

Two words: algorithms and incentives. Mostly incentives. Until we modify or eliminate incentives, all we can do is watch as the fabric of society is pulled apart, strand by strand. www.ft.com/content/5060...

Drives me mad that people talk about Danish immigration policy as a *political* success without bothering to look at the polls.
Aside from the crucial voting system difference, the Social Democrats over this period have haemorrhaged votes to progressive parties and are currently on course for their worst result in 110yrs, while the Green Left are set for their best ever.

The Danish People's Party are currently gaining.
what are the odds that the people in Downing Street briefing this out would also break out in hives at the mere mention of proportional representation?

I am not a lawyer, just a historian, but one fundamental problem with the political debate about the EU, especially in English publications is that the whole principle of the acquis communnitaire is not understood or taken seriously. The EU is a framework of rules, not an alliance.

Just finished watching the excellent new opera “Ali” at La Monnaie / De Munt. The true story of a Somali boy fleeing Al Shabab to Europe. Truly operatic in scale and emotion but with a fantastic score melding European, Arabic and Somali language and music. Strong recommend for Brusseleirs.
