I considered writing a long carefully constructed argument laying out the harms and limitations of AI, but instead I wrote about being a hater. Only humans can be haters.
I Am An AI Hater
I am an AI hater. This is considered rude, but I do not care, because I am a hater.

It is very funny that this Pope is just going to get jerseys from now on. Everyone decided that's what this Pope likes and that is it. It's like if your grandmother got you a puzzle for Christmas one year and you said you liked it so your entire extended family is like "oh that's the puzzle kid"
Spike Lee just blessed Pope Leo with a custom Knicks jersey during his visit to the Vatican, just one week after the Pope was gifted a custom Chicago Bulls one.

it's hard to accept that power and wealth do not require you to be smart or savvy in some way both bc we're told they do and also because it's insulting, but. here we are.

Also, understanding corruption as being about stealing *the public's right to self-govern* would help media to properly cover "budget-relieving" power grabs by wealthy people/industry (like donating money to police surveillance or - and nobody wants to discuss this - private $ for public positions)

Excellent short piece contesting the "technological revolution" narrative around the printing press, and how the metaphor of the tech "democracizing knowledge" is deeply flawed.

I decided to convert dollars to centimeters. That allows us to visualize, for example, the distance between having no money and being at poverty level — about four city blocks.

People have a hard time imagining what/who isn't there and hyperfocus on what is. "Is this service being delivered properly" is a Q like "is Jamie Lee Curtis a good actor" or "did student scores decrease during global pandemic" - "yes" isn't dispositive re: nepotism or public health/education policy
The problem isn't "we gave him money and he wasted it" it's that the job was represent and serve everyone and he only looked out for himself and his buddies

What does this mean in practice? It means focusing on the choices made instead of on the dollar figures.

This can be difficult! it's not always clear cut. It may not be "a thing that needs doing won't be competently handled bc it went to the wrong company
An important thing many corruption stories get wrong is that what's stolen isn't "taxpayer money" it's collective governance

The incredible, indomitable, inspirational Alice Wong has left us.

I'm so grateful to have known her on social media, and so grateful for all the words she shared with us and all the actions she encouraged us into making.

May we live up to her example.

(so you don't have to go to Instagram)

Alice was a friend, a mentor, and a guide to so many in the disability community, and especially in the realms of disability and technology and disabled-led design.

This one hurts bad, but some of her last words were "Don't let the bastards grind you down. I love you all."

Gonna try to hold that.

Not damned by their failures, damned by their goals
I think some people who are against AI for other reasons rely on the environmental impact because it is an easier argument to make. But what happens if/when better tech mitigates the impact? If you're against AI, argue against it on its own merits, not secondary ones.
The thing is that I'm against AI irrespective of its environmental impacts (which are also devastating, of course).

a useful thing about these categories is that "website that sells attention / ads" includes search engines and most (but not all) news sites
- website where person writes stuff
- website that sells attention/ads
- website that's a scam pretending to be one of the other types

What’s a wiki?

Well it’s like a website from someone who's really really into something but it’s a group of people and they argue about it via page edits.
