Death from sub-acute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) in a child in Los Angeles
SSPE is a rare sequel of #measles infection that appears years after the initial infection, and is uniformly fatal. So sorry for this family. As things are going on the US, we'll be seeing more of these cases.
Child dies from rare measles-related complication, LA County health officials say

(1/2) This year has reaffirmed to me how astute and tactically sound Nadal is on a tennis court. He may have been outplayed, but I rarely if, ever, felt like he had the wrong strategy or hit the wrong shot (one exception is the Miami final against Davydenko in 2008). That led to a different...

🧵 An open letter to the US Open and USTA:

Trump will attend the #USOpen as a guest of ROLEX. Yesterday, Trump declared 'WAR' on Chicago. The USTA has called for media censorship of dissent against Trump today.

I played NCAA tennis many years ago and still play. Today I resign my #USTA membership.

Currently at the beach. Nice day, perfect breeze, short walk to the water, busy but doesn't seem crowded, not noisy at all. Water is calm and a perfect temp.

Got nowhere else to be and we're making family memories that will last a long time.

Might be the best time I've had at the beach.

Want to know why demographers aren't panicking over low birth rates? @lesja.bsky.social, @shelleydclark.bsky.social, & I have a new piece in @theconversation.com explaining the faulty logic that underlies the low birth rate-induced population panic than fuels the pronatalism movement. 1/n
Fears that falling birth rates in US could lead to population collapse are based on faulty assumptions
While the changes in population structure that accompany low birth rates are real, the impact of these changes has been dramatically overstated.

I’m so far beyond livid that I can’t voice all my thoughts coherently - that “kindness” doesn’t mean helping only people who agree with you, that the rain that falls on red counties floods blue counties too, etc.

so I’m gonna leave it at “either be more like HEB or shut up”

The missing piece of this viral post is that the Texas officials are lying and deflecting blame. The NWS, hobbled as it is, issued an accurate flood watch for Kerr County the evening before and accurate escalating warnings overnight as the flood was developing.
After media reports & experts warned for months that drastic & sudden cuts at the Nat Weather Service by Trump could impair their forecasting ability & endanger lives during the storm season, TX officials blame an inaccurate forecast by NWS for the deadly results of the flood.

Maybe @axios & @cnn writers can write a book about it
