It will be interesting to see how overriding charter rights, forcing a rejected labour deal on workers, and threatening substantial fines will impact Alberta's plan to add and recruit 3,000 new teachers over the next 3 years.

Canadian entrepreneur Avi Bryant sold his startup to Twitter, made millions, and now wants higher taxes on the wealthy to lower inequality. He backs basic income, nonprofit housing, and land value tax.

Because Canada invested in him—and it’s time to give back.

Because it very well might.

While results from the Madison, Wisconsin $500/mo basic income pilot aren’t finalized, preliminary findings show a higher rate of families receiving payments were employed full-time halfway through the program, at the end of the year and six months later than families in the program’s control group.
Madison program gave away cash. People worked even more.
While the privately funded Madison Forward Fund showed promising results, Republican lawmakers are trying to block state funding for similar programs.

I tweeted about this guy last night and got all these replies from random people who said he'd saved their baby's life. Fuck being rich I would love to have been this guy, imagine how cool it would be to know you'd helped so many people. We need to name an airport after him or something

Drinking coffee could cut the risk of heart death by one third – but only if you drink it in the morning, a study suggests.

Research on over 40,000 adults who were tracked for more than a decade found that those who started the day with a cup fared far better than those who drank no coffee.

Denver gave people experiencing homelessness $1k/month. A year later, nearly half had housing.

They also had fewer ER visits, nights spent in a hospital, and jail stays.

The report estimates that this reduction in public service use SAVED the city $589k.

Good post by Matt Yglesias today. I would love to see more intellectual energy put into how to make urban spaces more accessible for children. Cities have so many opportunities for children, but they often lack appropriate residential spaces. 🧵
In another break from election-related commentary, I try to look at what it would look like to have family-friendly high rises with large multi-bedroom units and common courtyard spaces where kids can play safely unsupervised.
