@willhaycardiff.bsky.social It seems reform have done a massive direct mail to across Cardiff and Vale.More money than sense because they sent it to us in Pontcanna and Canton. People sharing tips on what they've responded with.

@roberthutton.co.uk @warmovietheatre.bsky.social The actor who was casted as Algy later became Bingo Little in Jeeves and Wooster with Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie.
I've yet to listen to the podcast, but I have done my homework, and watched this execrable film for the first and I suspect last time. While Peter Cushing is always good value, and he's carried a few stinkers in his time, this is beyond even his powers.
A beloved British hero, a masked German, a super-weapon, and... a time-travelling 1980s New York executive? We're watching the ultimate crime against literature and cinema: the Biggles movie. With @wallaceme.bsky.social of Total Politics, who was scarred for life by this film.

S4C/BBC provided coverage of a unique Welsh music competition over the weekend that is popular across Wales but completely unknown outside its borders. No streamers or any other channel would be interested in doing it.
Nowhere in the hysterical pile-on against the BBC in the British press has anyone mentioned that BBC News now has 77 million viewers & listeners in the US and has established itself as the second most trusted news source there.

The BBC/S4C provided radio and tv coverage for a major event in the Welsh cultural calendar over the weekend. There is no way another broadcaster/streaming services would be able to do it.
inspired by this, I have done a free extract of this section of the book here. it is about understanding that *with all its problems* the BBC is as important for our intellectual health as the NHS is for our physical health:

I fear that its becoming the new European Union of British politics, relentlessly attacked with no leading figures being ready to defend it.
Surprised how indignant a lot of people are about Davie’s resignation, given how relentlessly the BBC is criticised on here.

I don’t say the BBC should be beyond criticism. Far from it. But it’s not just the right that’s been steadily undermining it.

Oh, the 2025 John Lewis Christmas advertisement is out, and as the mother of a brown-haired teenage boy this one just hit me straight in the heart.

In defence of the BBC Wales, they went straight for the Plaid Cymru winner as he left the stage. The rest, presumably the London based press pack, went for the person that came second.
Still waiting for blanket coverage and platforming of Plaid Cymru and a flood of thinkpieces about progressive Britain - the vast majority of mainstream, liberal, modern and outward-looking voters who loathe Reform. Won't happen. Most of the media's not interested.

Jeremy Hunt, when as the Culture Secretary, did set up the Local TV imitative. But they made no impact because its all run by volunteers on the very cheapest of cheap. They mostly run cheap true crime and local news bulletin from someone's bedroom.
and if you think that if we let the BBC get destroyed what would come in its place would be *more* left-wing... I think you haven't really been paying attention to how money works, how much money tech billionaires have, and what they're doing with it in the UK media landscape *already*.

New post just out:

With five parties between 15%-26% of the vote our electoral system is going to produce increasingly mad results.

What would force a change?

If we did move to a new system what would it be?

How would it change politics?

I mean, the Americans voted for it didn't they? They had ample opportunity for eight years before the vote and think "Absolutely no way.", but nope they voted for him.

What HE managers fail to understand is that in the context of the Humanities, ‘employability’ isn’t teaching coding or carpentry, but skills around writing, presenting, reasoning, evaluation, analysis, research etc. In an 80% service economy, these are the skills that fundamentally matter.

Came across this old thing after reading @tommctague.bsky.social book: www.seangabb.co.uk/candidlist/i.... It was the system that was designed to denounce potential tory candidates who were pro-EU. Its going to take years for them to admit the whole thing was a bad idea.

The "great EU Flag trail of Wales". Where you visit all the buildings and infrastructure improvements with the EU flag on them.
What policy themed visitor trail would you do upon retirement? I would pilgrimage to visit the 100 Rishi Sunak outdoor chess sets around the country. I genuinely think it would be one of those fun random things that would take me to places I’d never otherwise go to

Thank you for this. I am looking forward to reading about how Brexit has delivered cheaper bananas and banned pet smuggling whilst I am queuing for 30 minutes to get my passport stamped at an airport.

Nearly 250 sources confirming 75 tangible Brexit benefits. Enjoy!

Its the bit where they say "we shall save money by not buying an electric car fleet" - but you are going to save money and get efficiencies in the long run. Lower maintenance costs, stable and cheaper power options which can be offset with solar panels.
*gasp*

Many of the lampoonist here went on to take political positions close to the Conservatives.
1. Atkinson became a free speech champion - his brother was a Brexit nutcase.
2. Stephen Fry has appeared on that ghastly triggernomotry podcast.
With the Tory conference starting shortly, here are 3 parody speeches from the past.

America has a Photo ID system through the Drivers Licence and its used every day including buying alcohol. Went to watch Mexico vs Wales in Pasadena Rose Bowl and the beer seller was insistent on 'seeing some ID' - including the 65 year old man in the queue behind me.
I realise the audience for this would just be "me, and also maybe other foreigners" but I would love to read something on why Brits, who are happy to live in a country where their every movement outside is filmed by CCTV, hate the idea of having ID cards, something plenty of countries happily have
September 26, 2025 at 10:25 AM
Perhaps, but British rollout of digital projects like this have been successful of late. Yes there are problems but they can be dealt with. For example, the Tell us once system is a great one.
I was broadly in favour of national ID until recently.

But I realise now that, rather than buying in battle tested technology from countries that have successfully adopted them (like Estonia), it seems much more likely we will bafflingly hand-roll a jolly British version.

At which point... 🤦 🤦‍♀️ 🤦‍♂️
September 26, 2025 at 10:13 AM
I know many pro-ID cards are citing the rest of Europe but America uses the drivers licence as a de-facto ID card - travelling on internal plane, verify your payment and proof of age.
