What is War Movie Theatre about? How do we pick the films?
The idea was first to talk about the films we watched growing up, and how they shaped our understanding of the world. But we've gone wider...

I've yet to listen to the podcast, but I have done my homework, and watched this execrable film for the first and I suspect last time. While Peter Cushing is always good value, and he's carried a few stinkers in his time, this is beyond even his powers.

Need cheering up after the cricket? The War Movie Theatre podcast is here for you, watching one of the worst films ever made, which tragically featured one of the great British heroes: Biggles.

It's not just the plot of Biggles: Adventures in Time that's terrible. There's also the music.

Oh thank goodness. Wouldn't have wanted him associated with anything that would later be embarrassing.
Plus I think I am right in saying that Peter Cushing's last appearance on screen was not this (or the music video) but on Jim'll Fix It.

Think Biggles is a children's character? Maybe that's what he became, but he started out in a much darker place.

If Biggles was American there'd be a dozen movies, TV series etc. much as I love Adventures In Time, I'd love a proper go at it. The WW1 era books are basically short stories and would work great as a series

All of the WWI aviation in this film is entirely correct, especially the bit where Biggles can fly a helicopter.

This did give us the chance to talk about why the Biggles books are brilliant - tough and traumatic rather than the Famous Five Go To War stereotype in people’s minds, and intended, presciently, by their author to help Britain get enough pilots to win a war with Nazi Germany.

I had huge fun talking to @duncanweldon.bsky.social and Rob for @warmovietheatre.bsky.social about the Biggles film. It’s the worst film I’ve ever watched (aged 11 and aged 41), so Duncan, Rob (and my wife) had to watch it too. Enjoy!

If I might criticise, the normal question “is this the operation which changed the course of World War 2?” should have remained.
It’s a film about WW1, so the answer to the question would be “yes”.

So this is (very) good but it makes that mistake so many film fans do of seeming to believe that film only starts in the sound era.

As @moviessilently.bsky.social incessantly points out, there had been 40 years of film development by then, including some *killer* war films...1/2
