Every decision made that impacts people overseas, not only reflects the moral commitments (or lack thereof) of the government you live under--but is also a snapshot of how the government will treat you.

I'm sorry but the largest protest of my lifetime is not the 7th or 8th biggest news story in the country behind "what does Gen Z want from Instagram?" This shit is humiliating. Rearrange your layout to meet this moment. Omitting the thing happening in every American city is malpractice.

So important. This is America.

Freedom, equality, democracy, human rights are not and never have been dictated by polling approval.
I just like to post these data from time to time to puncture the mythological aura of mid 20th c protests. They were less popular than pretty much any 21st c mass action & people criticizing them used the same lines. Protest is about people coming together, shaping narratives, & building power.

A lot of people are cringe and the most "edgy" political thing they've encountered is Hamilton and you're just going to have to live with that and be glad they're not at home OD'ing on white nationalist propaganda. They will be cringe and you can be like, jesus christ that's cringe. It's all fine.

"Contrary to popular belief, the military does not usually conduct parades for the public.…When the troops do parade, it's usually—as in 1991 or 1946—to celebrate a victory in a major war and to honor those who fought and won it. Whatever this event is really for, there is no victory to celebrate."

Stephen Miller should shut his fucking mouth unless he's owning up for his part. He fuels the violence.
Hours and hours after a domestic terrorist attack, Trump's WH Homeland Security Advisor weighs in.

To his credit, he names the victims.

But not their party.

And makes no mention of the role his own bile has in far right terrorist attacks.

The political assassination of Democratic lawmakers in Minnesota, the political prosecution of a federal judge in Wisconsin, political violence against Democratic mayors and Congresspeople in New Jersey, the state violence against Congresspeople in Los Angeles are all part of the same phenomenon.

I’m frequently asked: what’s the point of peaceful protests like #NoKings? It’s a chance to show civic strength and consolidate people power. They create collective identity and build capacity for social change. Done right, they can expand participation and mobilize support for longer term efforts.
Happy #NoKings Day to all who celebrate (so, basically anyone who treasures American Democracy)...

The business owners create the incentive for people to come. If we were serious, we would focus on them, but no, we're just going to punish poor people looking for a better life. Disgusting.

The GOP knows what needs to be done but the benefit from not doing it.
Despite Texas' tough talk on immigration, its lawmakers have refused to mandate that private businesses check employment authorization.

Why? Because they know “if you got serious about applying [E-Verify], you would create even worse problems” with labor shortages, a former GOP state lawmaker said.
Texas Talks Tough on Immigration. But Lawmakers Won’t Force Most Private Companies to Check Employment Authorization.
Texas’ conservative Legislature has again and again refused to mandate that most private businesses use E-Verify. Experts say that Republican resistance is rooted in how the system could impact the…

As we resist Trump’s tyranny, we gain solidarity.

As we gain solidarity, we feel more courageous — and we weaken Trump and his regime.

Today's protests are about standing up to Trump, but they're also about standing with each other.

Be safe. Be peaceful. Be strong.

All of this.

She was also the DFL leader for the Minnesota House this past session, in a power sharing agreement.

Look at the legacy in this thread and if you need me I’ll be angry crying.
Melissa Hortman, who was assassinated last night, was the Speaker of the Minnesota House in the 2023-2024 session, when Democrats ran the state government.

That means she had a leading role in shepherding the many landmark reforms that Dems adopted in that period—an important legacy. Brief 🧵.

Some thoughts about the military parade in my hometown of Washington DC today -- specifically, the route. Military parades in DC are quite rare. But when they happen, they have always begun, symbolically and geographically, at the Capitol and moved outward. 1/

With the tragic assassination of a Minnesota Democratic leader, I’m going to underline this point again.
I know there's a lot going on, but the Secretary of Homeland Security declaring that federal troops are in California and Los Angeles to "liberate" the state and city from its duly-elected leaders really is a fourteen-alarm fire.
It's mind-blowing how little attention this extraordinary statement has received. It's briefly mentioned in a couple news articles, but this MSNBC opinion piece is the only extended discussion of it I've seen: www.msnbc.com/opinion/msnb...
