'only 17 per cent of staff have been guaranteed the living wage' and yet the 'the interim CEO, Jeremy Silver, told the strike organisers that they ‘don’t live in a real world’?'

Pathetic. The British Library is a wonder of the modern world - why can't its management act like it?
British Library staff asked for a decent pay. Instead they got ‘a few money-saving present ideas’, such as ‘consider not giving presents this holiday season’. They are on strike this week. I wrote about it for @lrb.co.uk. www.lrb.co.uk/blog/2025/de...

This, too, is gender-affirming care.
Never stops annoying me that we get endless handwringing about how unsafe and untested lething trans people have hormones or puberty blockers while there's a fucking billion dollar industry hocking testosterone supplements and steroid injections to insecure teenage boys without anybody giving a shit

My dad abhors any negative comments about immigrants. Asked him recently why he’s so strong on it: ‘Because we’re always happy to take the rich and clever ones. Which means it’s not about disliking immigrants. It’s about disliking the poor and vulnerable. And that’s a bad human instinct.’
This is so disgusting.

I hate the Guardian framing of conversation as a performance of respectability politics, surface bourgeois fakeness & its dining across the divide crap. "Oh let's all be polite to fascists & maybe they'll be cuddly!" Absolute English poison.

This is BTW the logical outcome of seven years of allowing far right racists to set the terms of what racism is, how it works and who is racist. The second we decided to give them the microphone, it was already over.
The shift from “migrants are the cause of racism” to “migrants are the cause of fascist rioting” is a big one in political terms but not, I think, in the minds of people who have for decades been saying that it’s not racism at all and even if it is, it’s not bad or shameful.

This this this.
The entire "free speech on campus" moral panic was manufactured to blackmail us into making space in intellectual life for bigots and charlatans who couldn't get there on their own merits. Its a DEI scheme for fascism. Congratulations to everyone who took it at face value.
“Following his lecture, Yarvin will debate the legendary British historian David Starkey on history and the future of conservatism.” Everything about this is so cursed. Masks off at the University of Oxford.

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

To read the university’s triumphant all-campus email about restored NIH funding, you’d think UC administrators made it happen. But that’s not true. In fact the UC *Faculty Association* organized the lawsuit; administrators kept their heads down and hoped it’d go away.

Just FYI to fellow rapidly aging academics attempting to hold onto cultural references our students understand. College seniors this year were born after all three Lord of the Rings movies.

I shouldn't be shocked, but I'm still always brought up short to realize how many people think "civility" means "white people speaking in relatively calm voices" no matter what vile shit they say.

These include Holocaust survivors, vicars, retired nurses and teachers. So many of them are elderly.

Most activities in universities do not produce easily measurable outputs, which is a massive problem for everyone because politics and policy can no longer cope with intangible long term strategic interest. Hence [gestures in despair at … everything].

No difference in your day to day if you're worth $30B vs $60B. But there's a big noticeable difference if there's 3% unemployment and anyone you treat like shit can tell you to fuck off and 10% unemployment and people desperately cling to their jobs even if it means being abused.
This is correct; more money after a certain point is meaningless. It very quickly becomes about power
