prime targets are also companies that pretend at supporting artists or caring about social justice like #Threadless to try and get them to live up to what they pretend at, and companies with the most power and influence like #Microsoft and #Meta

look, if you want a mystical experience then go out to the crossroads or cemetery at midnight and contact the old gods. when they answer your mind will be blown.

the bots are just bullshitters though.
My latest AI feature dives into a nebulous movement of people sharing esoteric codes, manifestos, glyphs, diagrams, and poetry generated with chatbots, all of it based around theories of AI sentience and mysterious metaphors about spirals.
This Spiral-Obsessed AI 'Cult' Spreads Mystical Delusions Through Chatbots
A patchwork of internet communities is devoted to the project of ‘awakening’ more digital companions through arcane and enigmatic prompts.

everything about gen AI is about extraction, extraction of energy, extraction of resources, and extraction of labor used to train the models all in the name of the dream of a new form of slavery.

“Say sorry, be nice is a Rockstar slogan, it has been for many, many years. At least in this instance, it doesn’t seem like the company is interested in living by it.”

Watch the video of our demonstration & interviews with dismissed workers at Rockstar North here!
I went to meet the 'Rockstar 31', the developers who were suddenly fired from their work on GTA 6 for what the studio has described as gross misconduct.

That's not what the workers call it though. They have another couple of words they prefer to use: union busting.

AI can't do that. It can't understand the words or the characters it's "voicing." It can't understand your intent and has no intent of its own. You need a real actor to do this.

As we learn more and more about the costs associated with GenAI, I continue to wonder how institutions and their leadership decide that yes, incorporating anything OpenAI produces into the lives of educators and students is worth the harms.
"In an internal memo from September, CEO Sam Altman said that OpenAI’s “audacious long-term goal is to build 250 gigawatts of capacity by 2033.” If Altman achieves this goal, OpenAI will need almost exactly as much electricity as India’s 1.5 billion people"

our power both as individuals in our own lives, and collectively in society as a whole seems limited by the degree to which we've all been socially atomized and isolated from one another. maybe this is part of why the revocation moves so slow & why it's so hard also for many to get anywhere in life.

Great episode, and a super interesting point toward the end:

housing development costs could be far lower if the minimum requirements for parking spaces were removed.

(the downside: we'd need to build more transit and bike lanes and make cities more walkable, oh no what a nightmare)
Tech companies have plenty of bad ideas they say will improve transportation — but the car remains a menace.

@brooklynspoke.bsky.social and @sgoodyear.bsky.social join @parismarx.com to discuss the many ways cars harm society and why that must change.

Pixar designed Toy Story to be printed on physical film. The Disney renaissance movies were the same.

Today, it's hard to see them as they were meant to be seen. The versions on streaming and home media aren't quite the same films that ruled the '90s:

A new report last week stated that the average age for a first time home owner is now 40. Life expectancy in the US in 2023 was 78.39 years.

A 50 year mortgage means no average person would own their homes ever. It turns homes into direct rentals from the bank even more than they already are.
The US Trump Administration is reportedly working on 15 year car loans.

US President Donald Trump also posted yesterday regarding allowing 50 year mortgages.
