A final self-plug before the Winter break: SSRN finally deigned to share my work-in-progress on regulatory learning and the governance of innovation. There, I argue that futureproofing approaches and technology-neutral regulation can mess up learning processes. Comments are welcome!

Two Learning Pathologies in the Law of Innovation

Innovation generates, to a lesser or greater degree, uncertainties that regulators must deal with. Part of their toolkit for managing uncertainty involves the u

a while ago, whenever i would point this out center-right leaning people i knew would chide me and say that of course musk was doing good work and he would take us to mars or do X Y Z. yes he bullshits and says dumb things but look at the results blah blah blah
He’s not working on any of these.
Sometimes he replies "yeah" to a nazi and sometimes he writes a longpost about becoming a Kardashev II civilization via lunar mining and Ai satellite swarms and says its something hes working on

Kazuo Umezu believed children were more adaptable than adults in horrific situations because adults have rigid views of reality & break when those conceptions are shattered. In Drifting Classroom a boy imagines himself as a chair to remain perfectly still while a monster who detects motion hunts him

as someone who likes cute animal spam, I think it is also sadly not something I feel terribly outraged about. Those of us who like this content must be honest about how much are plandids or even staged
Of all the sins of AI, this is an unexpected and deeply annoying one
Funny animal videos no longer being trustworthy just fucking sucks all around. I love the wonder of animal behavior and what it says about the experience of being alive. It's because it happened in reality that it's so fun. It's not fun if it was just made up. There's no wonder there.

so this is an honest question and not a dunk. how much influence does Yglesias currently have in the Democratic Party? If he says something, who listens?

I find him deeply repulsive and want to calibrate just how much I should care about him
Yglesias referring to Senator Van Hollen as a "safe seat clout-chaser" is so despicable. VH took a stand to prevent Abrego García - an innocent man - from being disappeared into CECOT for life.
matt & co’s theory of how public opinion on immigration would respond to new information was simply empirically wrong.
at this point the only reasonable conclusion is they refuse to update their priors w/ new data because the data is inconvenient for them

Rumors of a firefight in the Capitol, the bombs planted at the DNC and RNC, the delayed police reaction, the lack of a response from the White House.

Things aren’t that bad (yet), but I forgot just how terrifying this could be.

Sometimes I think back to how terrifying it was to live in Washington, D.C., from December 2020 through January 6th.

This was the tail end of COVID, we were under curfew because of daily partisan street fights, and the day of January 6th was maddening without the benefit of hindsight.

years of lead paint
The supposedly dastardly Chinese algorithm that required everyone to lose their minds and set fire to the first amendment for this law also remains owned and developed by bytedance and is leased to the US consortium under this deal. So, y'know, congrats everyone, great job

i have not flown through DCA since January and I do not plan to for the foreseeable future
“The night everything at DCA finally went wrong” sure looks like the kind of careful, meticulously-sourced story I wanted to read about this disaster.

The level of background knowledge is clear. As is the understanding of the human toll.

I hope it gets widely recognized in journalism circles.
For the last few months, I've been working on a story about January's crash near Washington, D.C. What I learned was that it was simply an accident waiting to happen.
