Funny how executives talk about AI like the guys in Superbad talk about sex: "Oh yeah it's amazing, everyone's doing it, and so you *know* we're also doing it. What exactly are we doing? Oh, you know, the things. We do the things that make the- uh, that the ladies love."

Something I found fascinating from YouTube reactors watching Andor was how sure they were that villains would do a face-turn and become good rebels. So I guess it's not surprising to see twee "MTG, welcome to the resistance" stuff. Enjoy the wilderness, you earned it, is the only proper outcome.
This lady is not your friend.

No more "networking". We're back to friends. No more 4D opportunity chess. Your character is officially reflected in whom you surround yourself with again. This late capitalism "every individual is a storefront and everyone else a potential customer to be courted" social rot is in the bin.

Humans create make-believe. We draw arbitrary lines. We say you need to grab this object and get a foot inside the lines before going out. Generations pass, learning and perfecting new ways to accomplish that goal and to prevent it from happening. And such genuinely impressive things happen.

A nice thing about Conversation Analysis is going to a data session after a long downtime and getting that comforting pick-up sports sensation of "alright, I can still play"

Had a Ratatouille-style flashback to giving a conference presentation over Zoom and finding out that the software was helpfully filtering out all the "backround noise" of the crowds cheering in my crowd cheering data 😅
"But SURELY you can just autotranscribe your data"

I often think of Chaplin's line: "the misery now upon is but the passing of greed, the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress". Especially on hopeful days when the news frantically pumps a dousing from the gullet of any scared, bitter man it can find, out of concern for greed's safety.

People who show their whole ass like this tend to try and rescue it as "ah, but see, I MEANT to be wrong, to show that YOU are the fool!" And we need to be better at saying, even if it were true, that means you suck at talking, and you should improve at talking and stop wasting everyone else's time.
"Torment Nexus" comes from this tweet and is often used now to describe the kind of negative experiences you can have with social networks, like getting dogpiled or harassed or being pushed into conflict

About 12 years ago I was taking a train from Dublin and some teens fired up a bluetooth speaker. An American tourist next to me, who had already elected herself our police chief, piped up to confront them and tried to give me a commiserating look. I just laughed and said: "oh, you're about to *die*"

When I unchecked "Let YouTube enhance visual quality" it automatically trasferred me back to the regular settings tab, so I had to navigate *back* to advanced settings to also uncheck "Let YouTube enhance audio quality" right below it.

Popular services always try to MAXIMIZE friction, right?
Hey everyone, here's a real simple way to disable "Super Resolution" on your channels:

• YouTube Studio
• Settings
• Channel
• Advanced settings
• Uncheck "Let YouTube enhance visual quality"
• Uncheck "Let YouTube enhance audio quality"

This is a big part of what people warned about with “AI”: being able to delegate life and death decisions to an unaccountable black box algorithm… that they can program to do whatever they want
I’m sorry, if someone has a birth certificate that proves they were born here but a mobile app with face recognition software disagrees, they will side with the app?

What?
New incredible detail here: ICE says a match in its facial recognition app Mobile Fortify is a "definitive" determination of a person's status, and that this overrides birth certificates. This is an app ICE is using in the field to scan people
