It really pays to remind ourselves frequently that this whole immigration "crisis" is made up out of whole cloth. There was no emergency, danger or problem, only a demagogue stirring up racist grievances for political advantage.

"rich dipshit owner doesn't understand the industry he's bought into and clumsily destroys what made it good" feels less like a narrative unique to the washington post and more like the music that's been playing in the background of all our lives for at least 40 years

death by preventable disease is an inevitable and even desired outcome of concentration camps. in every era of concentration camps people have died of typhus, which is a disease of privation and enforced crowding. this illness is intentionally inflicted

Epstein’s economic power among academics was made possible by a capitalist system that makes higher education dependent on the charity economy rather than a public good supported by taxing the rich

If you CAN do nothing tomorrow:
Avoid streaming services: break out the Blu-rays, CDs and the old iPods. Stuff you OWN.
Avoid all MONETISED social media - no FB/IG/Tumblr/Tiktok etc.
don’t consume media owned by billionaires (eg LAtimes/Wapo, WB, Paramount, Murdock etc).
Read books, write, art.
General Strike tomorrow. Don't do NOTHIN'. 🖕🧊🔥

Voting NO on the DHS funding bill is the bare minimum.

Backing Kristi Noem’s impeachment is the bare minimum.

Holding law-breaking ICE agents legally accountable is the bare minimum.

ICE is beyond reform. Abolish it.

At the end of the day, the Black Lives Matter era was about whether people should be killed in the street, and lots of people decided yeah and put those little blue flags on their cars. It spread to everyone because it stopped for no one.

We handled this by taking our Alexa and putting it in a trashcan. Like six months ago. We used it to play music and just set timers and that didn’t seem worth the tradeoffs of domestic surveillance in a time of rising authoritarianism but … ymmv
If you have an Alexa, you can escape from
Alexa+ Hell for now by saying “Alexa, exit Alexa+” (or “computer, exit Alexa+. Whatever your wake word is)
We have an Echo and smart switches/plugs around the house. Every night I ask it to turn all the lights off when I go to bed. Tonight I asked 3 times, some lights stayed on. “I tried to turn all the lights off” it said in a new AI enhanced voice. And that’s how I learned Alexa Plus was deployed

they want to see suffering, it's very important to them that they get to witness suffering, all of this is for nothing if they don't get to see misery on the faces of their enemies
This is the first example I’ve seen of an American government using AI to meaningfully misrepresent actual events with the intent to deceive the public. We are at Stalinesque levels of propaganda.

Even after Trump is gone, the world will remember that he threatened to forcibly seize the territory of a peaceful democratic ally, and our institutions failed to immediately remove him. That makes US dangerously unreliable, not just one senile gangster.
His not being impeached by the end of the business day as a result of this threat is as much a problem as the threat itself. It’s not just Trump that the world has to worry about, it’s a GOP that supports him and Democrats who suck their thumbs and refuse to even discuss pushing to remove him

Great thread if you need some hope
I came to Minneapolis to report on what's going on, and one of the main questions I showed up with is "just what is the scale of the resistance?" After all, we're all used to the news calling Portland a "war zone" or whatever when it's just some protests in one part of town.

Word. I once saw this issue described in the metaphor of a line cook, in full view of everyone else, hocking a loogie into someone's food.

Yes, obvz, fire the cook. But the main issue is, he did it without fear of punishment. He didn't even try to hide it.

The real problem is the whole kitchen.
