The Trump administration’s efforts to reduce the foreign-born population are being felt across the country. A past era of immigration crackdowns contains some lessons on how walling off the U.S. now will profoundly alter daily life for millions of Americans.
What America Might Look Like With Zero Immigration
The Trump administration’s efforts to reduce the foreign-born population are being felt in hospitals and soccer leagues and on Main Streets across the country, with hints of what’s to come.

IF YOU ARE READING SOMETHING AND IT IS HARD BUT YOU HAVE TO READ IT

1. use a thing that will sit right under the line you're reading, so you know where you are in the text

2. read it out loud because your active participation will help

3. get a definition of a weird word and WRITE IT DOWN

I don't know that much about Kat Abughazaleh, but it seems to me that using your political campaign to support mutual aid is just starting how you mean to go on.

Me when Chef walks by and thanks me for being there today, meanwhile I've spent the last hour contemplating the earliest I can leave without looking like a complete slacker.
You don’t have to thank me for doing my stupid job. But it is nice.

IT HAPPENED TO ME!
My 95 anchor baby grandpa started with a heartwarming tale of a 10yr old boy helping his austrian immigrant mother fill out citizenship papers and ended with a rant against illegals just being let into this country and committing crimes.

And tiny tim, who did NOT die, could’ve become a mass murder.
and tiny tim, who did NOT die, beat on, a boat against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the christmas past.
Man said, "Tiny Tim, is this the end? Can this chaos not be reversed into the Universe once more? Can that not be done?"

And Tiny Tim, who did NOT die, answered: "THERE IS AS YET INSUFFICIENT DATA FOR A MEANINGFUL ANSWER."

It’s an untrued pattern. The leg will always be twisted, the sleeve will never fit the armhole, the collar will never lay smoothly, because it’s not based in reality and what we know instinctively to be true.
I'd argue it's worse than a blank page, in the same way that garment pieces cut slightly off the grain are worse than not having cut yet.

When a thing is wrong, it will suck your energy into making it Less Wrong, which is often not the same as making it right.
Just a thing about this: a common statement in writing is that you can fix crap, but you can't fix a blank page.

I have heard AI apologists claim that this is why it's fine to generate a first draft.

Now, to be clear, fuck this.

But also: an AI draft is a fucking blank page.

Late to the party here but i’m now about 3/4 through discworld and seeing so many of the building blocks that would become good omens it’s difficult to imagine gaiman having written any of it. His style and oeuvre are just so different.

Using a theft-driven algorithm to tell you things you think you already know is not research, it’s just reinforcing preexisting biases. Kinda like how race science told colonizers what they wanted to hear.

Americans & Europeans needlessly exposing African babies to preventable diseases just to see if they can find something that would justify their preexisting antivaccine beliefs is not only unscientific and actually anti-science, it is very much reminiscent of colonialist, racist human rights abuses
“It is not clear what the research question is. It seems to be about the safety of the vaccine rather than its effectiveness, but both are already well-established, and to undertake such a study in a population where almost 1/5 of the adult population has a marker of infection seems extremely risky”
