Eventually we got there.

Location Sharing story cont.

Me: Great, but why are you in miles?

Mom: I’m not. My phone is.

Me: We can fix that.

Brother enters the chat: 😂😂😂😂

Location Sharing story cont.

Mom: Oh, you’re in X already!

Me: no, mom. You are in X. I’m still 1.5 hours away.

Me: You shared your location with me. You don’t need to do that to see my location.

Long pause

Mom: oh, I see you now. You’re 75 miles away

Cont.

Location Sharing with a parent. A simple task?

Me: I’m sharing my location so you can see when I’m arriving. Let me know if you have issues

My mom: I have issues

Me: be more specific. can’t see my location?

Mom: No

Me: ok <proceeds to give detailed directions>

Long pause

Yeah, it does have a bit of a small airlock feel to it.

“Open the pod bay doors, HAL” was in no way going through my mind.

I guess the main advantage is price (I only needed it for about 4-5 hours to get at least some rest before next journey leg) and it’s right in the airport.

But I was definitely the oldest customer I think. 😂

I mean if you’re claustrophobic that would be something else. The biggest issue was noise. The person in the pod above me had their alarm set early and I could hear it. Could occasionally hear people opening their pod bay doors. (Queue 2001 reference if you like)

Never done MRI so can’t speak to comparison but they honestly were not that bad. Enough room inside for me and my daypack. I could even sit up in the bed.

There was an area with lockers for bigger bags, toilets and showers.

Everything was super clean and came to less than $100.

Slept in an airport capsule hotel last night.

Not sure what vibe they were going for but if it was long-term space travel, they nailed it.

Had a very Fifth Element vibe.

A thread of “nope”

Also why we have a beautiful spiral wooden tree since the kids insist we have to have something.
they don’t tell you when you buy a christmas tree at the christmas tree farm that you could take it home, decorate it, and then be relaxing in your living room seven nights later when A BAT suddenly flies out and starts CRASHING AROUND YOUR HOUSE

Sigh. Breaking my 15 year record of successfully avoiding flying during the holidays.
This whole sandwich generation thing is tough.

Shout out to all of you juggling commitments this holiday season.

Interesting choice.

Either you are too young to get the reference and it is just creepy and weird.

Or you are old enough and it is *really* creepy and weird.
Having been born on this day in 1957, I am somewhat susceptible to tv adverts we see at this time of year, ones that use the festivities of the 1970s as a means of evoking nostalgia for Christmases gone by. I think this one may have gone a bit too far however.

“Like Prime, but with human beings.”

Let me think. Where have I heard about people being seen as less than human and sent to facilities to be warehoused?

Right. So many to list. You don’t even have to pull from other places. Those were the absolute lowest points in US history.
“.. We need to get better at treating this like a business,” ICE acting director Todd M. Lyons said .. as efficiently as Amazon moves packages: “Like Prime, but with human beings.”

Yes. A simple question. One that you could answer for yourself in about 2 minutes. Try Wikipedia as a place to start. Oh, while you are there, there’s probably an entry on sealioning. You might find it educational.

Shortly after moving to Vancouver from DC I had a connecting flight through Calgary. Was in the middle of a snowstorm. In April?!?!?

I grew up in Montreal and Toronto. Was great to be back in Canada but was definitely glad I ended up in Vancouver.

Felt rather treacherous up here in the Great White North as I watched that leaked CBS CECOT piece. Good god, Atlantic, get a grip.

Thing is, Global pulled it pretty fast and it’s not like they are known as some leftie outlet.
The Atlantic suggesting, without evidence, that Canada's Global TV broadcasting the '60 Minutes' segment on CECOT that CBS distributed to it may have been an act of "treachery."

And sometimes you’re lucky and some of their interests have overlap with yours.

I get to take them and their friends to all Marvel movies plus we’re now on our second D&D campaign.

Both of which they pretty much came to on their own, but I’m happy to oblige.
Tweens and Teens RPG (#TTRPG) yesterday was an encounter with Astral Elves fueled by the kids' own baking.

Kid1 made sugar cookies and kid2 made Brazilian cheese bread. Super proud of them.

This parenting thing is turning out all right.

Christmas came early for me, with delivery of my new @airspool.bsky.social heat pump. The driving force behind me getting this thing was that it promised to be easy to install, and boy was it ever! Read on to see how I got it on the night it was delivered without drilling a big hole through my wall.

Well it sure as hell ain’t Native Americans despite the name.

Reminds me of a time (in Canada) when my father was in a bar. Guy was going off about how his family come over on a ship couple hundred years ago.

My dad: “Yeah, so? We came over on a 747. What’s your point?”

"He will never be an American. And no amount of ideological sophistry or paperwork will change that fundamental truth"

That's how white nationalists view Vivek Ramaswamy, who was born in the USA.

Me (Arab and born American but abroad)? I'll also never be American to them. It's just "paperwork"
Andrew Torba, the CEO of Gab, a social media platform known as a haven for white nationalists, falsely wrote this week that Ohio GOP gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy — who was born in Cincinnati, Ohio — "will never be an American."

Lovely portrait of Swiftie Dads.

But it doesn't have to be Taylor Swift. If your teen kid wants to include you in their thing (whatever it is), the answer is Yes.

Going to another concert in Jan for a band I have no clue about. But Kid1 likes them.
In 2023 I became obsessed with videos of dads in cargo shortswaiting in parking lots during Taylor Swift's Eras Tour. So when she came to town, I grabbed a camera and headed down to talk to them. I thought it'd be funny. It turned out to be something else entirely.

I answered this survey on LLM use in SFF writing as a member of the public.

Why? Because I don’t want to read GenAI slop. But also I don’t want the writers I read to have to deal with this in an already difficult profession. And the editors who have to wade through AI submissions.
SFWA is doing a survey on LLM use in the industry. You don't need to be a member to submit. Writers/artists/humans need all the advocates we can get, and I hope we can encourage SFWA to take a strong stance. www.sfwa.org/sfwa-survey-...
