This has been my main gripe against popularism the whole time. And good on Rep. Casten for mentioning abolition as a counter example. Women’s suffrage, the civil rights movement, marriage equality. None of these happened because leaders followed only what was popular at the time.
3. Leadership is about doing what is necessary, not just what is popular. Read literally anything our founders wrote about virtue, and the inherent risks to a society based on democratic processes to sustain the rule of law to the extent that unvirtuous people gain power.
