Playing history. Filmmaker and Designer of “Chicago 68” and “The Nights of King Ludd”
Pinned
So excited to finally have a copy of CHICAGO’68! Last week I had a chance to lay it all out and run one last round of usability checks before we go to print. Pleased as punch with the results:

I can sympathize with @hypatian.org knowing and understanding the history, it is a lot. particularly in a modern context where the echoes of histories ignored still cause harm. but that's the reason I felt it important to bring it to the table. to feel those feels and reflect. thanks for playing.
We played Cross Bronx Expressway tonight. @hypatian.org found it challenging because, already understanding the history and politics she found it depressing to “have her nose rubbed in it”

Excited to try the Glasgow Train Robbery. Did you outwit the sentient monopoly board chasing you around the flat?

It’s not fair, I suppose, that I’m always measuring these films against Dreyer’s Joan

That’s a great observation! I appreciated how - in the second half of the film - the American frontier incubated all these esoteric religions, while also harboring profound violence and repression. I just wish there was a bit more depth and nuance to Ann’s (and the Shakers) convictions…

I wasn’t sold on her religious ecstasy but the choreography (and that woodwork!) was dazzling. My partner grew up singing those shaker songs and we frequently spend holidays at the shaker village (now a heritage site).

Yeeeah, a friend went “all-in” on the extras. The metal coins are even more useless than their cardboard predecessors. The modules themselves introduce a few more points of tension, but the overall experience is still fundamentally Inis: migration and integration with the other.

Played the new Inis expansion. I wasn’t expecting much from the new modules but the extra actions / deeds are pretty seamless. The metal pieces are ridiculous tho.

So jarring to read old board game rule books with only male pronouns. And by “old” I mean “2016” 🤮

Then don't make the game. It's a simple as that.

If a game needs to use a plagiarism machine to exist, it doesn't need to exist.

After years of playing #beyondthesun, we finally attempted the advanced factions. It’s true that this module is not precisely balanced, but what it offers is a more rewarding chain of actions. Perhaps a bit too linear in this beautifully rhizomatic decision space, but still a welcome variant!

Your regular reminder that you can in fact tackle sensitive and thorny political and societal issues with board games and they can even be fun to play, only thing is you need to actually give it some thought, care and attention
