If the president can just raise taxes and spend money without Congressional approval, the constitution is null and void.
BREAKING: Deputy White House Chief of Staff James Blair said the administration is eyeing ways to give millions of Americans $2,000 dividend checks from tariff revenue without congressional approval, per Bloomberg.

I think it's undeniable that a lot of people enjoy using LLMs and other GenAI for various purposes. I even get it to an extent. There's a fun novelty to it as long as you're never asked to pay anything which is not something that can continue.

Most people don't know the real effects.
There’s a very surreal conversation I keep having on here where people seem unable to hold two ideas at the same time, and I’m not sure why. It’s simply true that the Big AI platforms like ChatGPT are:
1. Extremely bad for society, in many ways.
2. Very genuinely popular with lots of people.

Not entirely the point, but getting a bit exhausted of stories that are just, "Hey, you know that thing Trump did that we all saw but he insisted he didn't do even though yes of course he obviously did it.

Turns out he really did that thing."

@aaron.bsky.team Bluesky needs to do better. You won't see this thread, or if you do, chances are you won't care or will think I'm just being petty and ridiculous. I've been here since before you were appointed though and I want this place to be BETTER. I want marginalised folks to be safe.

I have a weird pet theory that her time working with Trump has convinced her he isn't the savior who will expose the deep state but she could be.

Far more likely that she just sees which way the wind is blowing, but at some point the illusion has to adjust.
broadly agree here in that we shouldn't be whitewashing MTG.

I think her motives are probably more about helping herself? like, she may form alliances with Vance or Musk or Thiel, but she is herself a very ambitious political leader. 1
1/6 Democrats need to be more inclusive, especially with voters.

But inclusivity does not mean whitewashing far-right pro-Russian conspiracy theorists like Marjorie Taylor Greene.

She is not backstabbing Trump to help Democrats but to help Vance, Musk and Thiel, who are worse

Obviously Kat is gonna be polite but this is just so truly mean. Basically a faux nice "have fun in prison". Again, no shade on how it was handled but what a disgusting person.
Yesterday, a Republican tried to give me holy water and Trump perfume because I’m “demonic.”

Extremely normal stuff coming from an extremely normal party.

Do you watch action movies? Would you like to be shot at? Okay then everyone should be able to grasp that fantasies are not wishes.
What people like to fantasize about, and very specifically when it involves power dynamics, has little to do with what they want IRL

A lot of older romance novels written specifically for cis straight women, involved themes of kidnapping and forced reluctance (soft rape).

Most readers did not...
Could be, but if you look at the amount of "stepdaughter" content on porn sites I think a very uncomfortable number of people may actually be into that. And I suspect they're mostly (although ofc not exclusively) in the enemy party.

I'm not trying to be mean, but racists who believe Trump betrayed them by being a child molester are not going to embrace the Democratic Party without forcing that party to embrace racism. And the people gained would in no way make up for those lost.

I see no path forward between what people are saying they want and the Democratic party as currently constituted. No path.

For what feels like forever, we've been addressing Republican dog whistles. Democrats have always tried to placate Republican concerns about immigrant crime. Turns out, the crime is being an immigrant. Always was. Immigration. Crime. Economic anxiety. All euphemisms for fucking over minorities.
Bovino: "Whether they were criminals or individuals that were taking jobs from Americans -- you name it, that's what they were doing. And I'll tell you what's gonna happen. We're gonna go even harder on the streets. If he releases those 650, we're gonna apprehend 1,650 on the streets of Chicago."

Never mind that a lot of them are rich specifically because of where they live. Are all the stock brokers in NY gonna open up investment firms in Tennessee? Rich in the fashion industry? Yeah, you aren't gonna be leaving for Alabama any time soon.
I say it over and over again: when you have that much money, you want to live where you want to live and you are simply not going to relocate because of marginal tax rates

Alan Dershowitz will never leave Martha’s Vineyard and they won’t even sell him a pierogi
NEW: The first two years of Massachusetts' millionaire tax has raised $3 billion more than expected.

And rather than driving the rich away, IPS researchers found that the number of millionaires has *increased.*

Also there is a limit to what reconciliation can do. You can't pass abortion protection through reconciliation. It limits politics to budget arguments, the favorite subject of politicians because it is boring and easy to obscure what is actually being done.
Do they?

I promise you I have had left wing people insist that the filibuster stood in the way of single payer or packing the court or voting reform when either party could get rid of the filibuster with a simple majority vote.

It stands in the way like a wall made of a single layer of wax paper.
I’m not sure that makes sense because the left wing base knows that it’s a lot of hooey and the right wing base will believe any old nonsense
November 13, 2025 at 11:17 PM
The filibuster is a load bearing pillar of the legislative paralysis that 99% of legislators love. Requiring any law to get 66% to pass basically means nothing will get passed and it's no one person's fault. Hence why everyone hates Congress but reelection rates are through the roof.
I will never stop making this point: Republicans and Democrats both love the filibuster because it protects them from their base.

Either what their base wants are things that would get them voted out of office, or they want things that would anger their wealthy donors.

People criticizing this are doing so from a perspective of an observed factual reality in which illegal immigrants are on average poorer than citizens for obvious reasons. They forget that in the Republican reality, illegal immigrants also get fat government payouts from every social service.
JD Vance: "A lot of young people are saying housing is way too expensive. Why is that? Because we flooded the country with 30 million illegal immigrants who were taking houses that ought by right go to American citizens."

Quick reminder that when it looks like someone you hate may have sexually abused children, it is not the time to make jokes (including at that person's expense!) about sexually abusing children.

The appropriate time for that is: never.

Sure, let's turn Disney+ into YouTube where you have to wade through AI the worst slop you've ever seen in kids entertainment. That is gonna really help the brand.
Bob Iger says Disney+ will soon have AI-generated short form content from users
