Admittedly I haven't done a whole lot in terms of 3d dev work. But to my mind, making Z the vertical dimension makes a lot of sense.
For any game world with a consistent gravity, the two horizontals have more in common than the vertical. Shouldn't the more-similar dimensions have adjacent labels?

Major evolution in the GZDoom community tonight - the regular contributors finally had enough of the project lead, who had been very hard to work with for a long time. He dug in and told them "If you don't like it, go and make your own fork."
