someone who actually grew up in Taiwan would know better than I would (and I'm looking for a post somewhere with more analysis of the references!), but Makoto gave me knockoff Kaneshiro Takeshi vibes right off the bat (no spoilers haha)

if you are wondering about the horror content in this movie, if Addams Family is a 1, Shaun of the Dead is a 4, and Dark Water 仄暗い水の底から(2002) is a 7, then this is a 2, I guess? However gore doesn't bother me so ymmv. Friend is a horror fan and I'm not, but it still worked for both of us

Watched Taiwanese horror-comedy 鬼才之道 Dead Talents Society and was SURE (between that music video/karaoke, the Japanese horror references, and the Perfect Blue thing) that the director must be about my age, and sure enough! Anyway STRONG rec; it's on Netflix in the US currently. Watch the credits!

Tommy Atkins is the Red Delicious of mangos, if Red Delicious apples had a horrible stringy texture and weren't just bland but also kind of unpleasantly medicinal. It's hardy and ships well, that's it. (I hear that where they're grown, they're allowed to fully ripen and are less bad, but 🤷)
